Thanks Neil, interesting document. It was a document dated 1730 about 140 Far Gosford Street which was a property called The Bishop Blaize that enabled me to link my tree to the earlier family. This document shows the inside of 142 so I wonder if it was the same. Found this other document.

Thanks for the link Anne Was interesting to learn that "French" was the name of a laundry which once stood on the corner of Lower Ford Street. It's typical of the council though that they use the word 'conservation' when they plan to knock down even more of the surviving period buildings!

More restoration to go ahead - I like the typo in the article which states "Chris Patrick, the council's conservation and archaeology officer, said the first phase of the scheme in 2012, which cost £2.7m, had seen the repair of two timber-framed buildings and a 19th century weaver, among other projects." It's surprising what modern medicine can do!

I remember going to Far Gosford St with my Brownie troup in the 50's to plant spring bulbs in the grounds of All Saints Church

My uncle Robin White ran a hairdressers/barbers at the top of Far Gosford St in the 1960's

Yes I have recollections of the dog on Astons roof believe it was a large Alsatian barked a lot and was often hanging over the edge

There was a greengrocer just below the Odeon (Scala) and on the opposite side next to a bank (which I think was on the corner of Paynes Lane) was a pharmacy. It was either from this shop or the one next down that my elder brother bought a set of three ceramic kingfishers to place on the wall as a gift to my mother. (Kitsch) I wonder what she thought of them, but they went up on the wall and stayed there until we moved within Stoke to Binley Road area.

Urban Coffee Company has been announced for 'Fargo' village and the plans for the offices/residential at the bottom of the street look very good indeed.

The milk bar, if I remember, was the Moo Cow milk bar!

Roy Evans was well known to me too as my father bought his shoes there 'from the same last' as he always claimed. The manager was a very kindly tall gentleman with a military style waxed moustache - Mr. Hunt. I came to know him well as we attended the same Church.

At the Scala, maybe The Odeon by then, I saw "A Tale of Two Cities" in black and white, around 1952 and the shorter 'horror' film that was shown with it was "The woman who came back".

Does anyone remember Sykes, the hairdresser (men and women) on Binley Road near St George's Road, Peter and Paul (twins) Sykes were in my class at Folly Lane (Gosford Park) School.
