Much Park Street

As per Anne's post#91 and mention of Judges Court - CliffB has found this cracker of it -

That really is a cracker, Neil, the best view of that part of Much Park Street I've ever seen.

Judges Court was where they put up the circuit judges when they were in town. Despite the Georgian makeover the buildings were much older and in serious disrepair. Worst of all was the smell, apparently. It may have been a mixture of rotting building and sewage from the descriptions. I've wondered what message the City was sending to the judges and whether it was a factor in the end of the County Court on Cuckoo Lane.

My great-aunt Lydia Morley was cook to the Doctor ? who lived there in the 1930s and later to Siegfried Bettmann at Elm Bank, Stoke Park. The signs (brass on wood) might give a clue to who he was. I would recognise the name but have forgotten!

I think it was Dr Phillips Prof Wow, I just looked up the County Hall court and it was still in use in 1988.

Can confirm that, Helen, an article in the Coventry Herald 1939 shows Dr Edward Phillips and his wife celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. It says they had recently left Judges Court and moved to Oxford.

The new County Court was definitely up and running as part of the new complex in Little Park Street in 1988. I was working at the Magistrates Court around that time (working not appearing!)
