New member, endeavouring to rediscover the Coventry I knew over 50 years ago. Wasn't this beautiful building formerly Boots the Chemist?

I thought it was also called Boots after the takeover of Timothy White's in 1968?

Boots occupied part of it, but it was TW and T till well after that. We bought a set of saucepans there when we married in 73, from TW and T's shop - and still have them in almost daily use!! |

Rob already posted this in the "Now and Then" section!
There's another view from a slightly different angle in the same section:

What a fabulous photo:
I'd love to be that what appears to be an XK140 driver. How cool would that have been new. Because of that I'd say circa 1955ish? |

Hi Neils, interesting photo, I am a great 'zoomer inner' and love looking for details. Now that is the Coventry I love. Must be peak hour. Rushed across there many a time to catch the school bus. |

That's a great picture. If you look at the same view today, it's a pretty horrendous scene of concrete with that lively looking street replaced by dead spaces and ring road flyovers.

Hi all
I agree with that Flapdoodle, it's a lovely photo. I agree with the date also. The second bus approaching the camera is one of the then new RWK fleet, introduced at that date. I would even guess that it is on route 22, itself a new route then, Purcell Rd to Willenhall. The existing fleet did not have Purcell Rd on their destination blinds, so either had Sewall Highway or had a wooden name board on the front. It was convenient to allocate those new buses with Purcell Rd included. I loved that route, as it passed the old Coventry sheds off Quinton Rd. Those were the days. |

Hi again
On the days when I went to school on the bus, I got off the No.7 from Sewall Highway to Allesley, the stop was then at the end of Ford St. I then walked passed the fire station on way to board either the No.16 or 17, from outside Lyons cafe in Broadgate, to arrive at Spencer Rd for about 8.50am. That photo says so much. |

When do you reckon that No.22 bus service started? I would have thought that it was later than 1955? |

Not sure when it started, I moved to Willenhall in 1953 and it was running then. |
