Hi Prof. Court 15 was behind number 35 but they would have been at property number 3 in court 15 (35 was a few buildings east of The Blue Pig on the north side of the road). I think that the building on the right is where they lived. Not only were there various smelly cubicles in the yard, on the left, directly next to the chimney was a slaughter house at one point. No wonder they moved The photo looks roughly north west.

This is labelled court 24 but I'm reasonably sure that this is the other side of court 15 with number 4 closest to the camera and 8 and 9 of court 14 on the right.

There's a lot already gone here with this view from Jordan Well, however some interesting snippets on Gosford Street still showing in colour, though about to disappear. Dated 18/09/65. |

The Gosford Street pics are smashing. The building in the foreground is the Mermaid and the chapel is nearby on the other side of the road. I don't think it's taken from the Gulson Hospital. I'll try and work it out. My initial thought was it was taken from the wallpaper place right at the top of the hill before it runs down to the river.
I don't think the photos are earlier than the 1920s and possibly more likely to be the 1930s.
Additional - Looking at BFA the Gosford Street photos were more likely taken from the telephone works. BFA. That also makes it closer to the 30s or later. |

The Gaumont dome is there, and the cathedral is still in one piece, so I think that narrows it down to between 1931 and 1940. |

In that one you can see the chapel. Originally that site had a very extensive and grand range of buildings that before demolition became a malt house and attendant buildings.
When you see the Mermaid and its neighbour from the front, it's very hard to believe that they were timber buildings, especially as the Mermaid is so tall. However, Neil's photo from post 170 and these show that the two were very probably much older than they look. The fronts were most likely jettied.

Could also be added to the pubs' thread but Dean Nelson has just added this one on FB, not seen before, of the Fox & Vivian at no.48. Probably in its last days.

What I find interesting is that the ghost of the next door roofline still remained, even though it was demolished round about the end of 1918. |
