Number 10 was just after the jettied building on the west side. It's on the right of Osmiroid's coloured picture at #177 and the one on the right of this CD picture. Note that the Bullring had it's own numbering.

Brill as usual Helen thanks. Interestingly the relation was a Lazarus Podesta - listed in the 1921 directory as a Furniture Remover but the contact says he developed an Ice Cream shop. He was an Italian Immigrant. Thumbs up

Love the name. At the moment I'm getting Cleophas Ratliff and Cleophas Dullison cropping up in research. It's the sort of name that vanished from this country but sometimes crops up in America. Here's a link to a painting of number 10.

Paul Glover was the chap on FB who was the great grandson of Lazarus Podesta posted earlier. He has just added this pic of him and believes it's a 1920's photo, possibly at the rear of that shop address at 10 Butcher Row -

I know I've shared some colour-tinted stuff before but had to include this one which was done by FB user Mark Tattam (and shared with his approval) - Really brings the image to life and really shows the state some of the row was in but also highlights signage/wording not previously readable -

I know this is a well known image but I've only just spotted that plaque on the upper right edge. Can anyone make out what is says? I think it starts "Erected.............. but can I also see the words "Bablake" and "Estate" as well?

I agree with what you've got so far. The land and buildings belonged to the Bablake Boys Charity Estate and I can see 'Boys'. 1819 at the bottom? That dates fits with the maps. It wasn't there in 1807 but was by 1837. I think that there is 'By J' somebody?

More shared family gold here - again often more interesting than the usual postcard view. This has come from Caroline Hobday on FB and shared with her permission. My Great Grandfather's shop in Butcher Row, George's fondly known as George's Ices, he was the first to sell ice cream from horse and cart then in his shop, came over from Italy when he was around 9 years old, lived with relatives in London then in his teens came to Coventry, met and married Mary (Polly) Ann (n

Excellent Neil Double thumbs up It fits with the one visible on the corner of Little Butcher Row, occupied in the previous photo by L Fern. Before the big billboard went up. See the repaired brickwork below the upstairs window.

Brill Helen! I did wonder why I couldn't see anything in Butcher Row itself. Any idea what year that one is?

There are a couple of articles in the CET about George and it is listed as Little Butcher Row. In 1918 and 1922 he was prosecuted for selling after 8pm and who can blame him fir not turning customers away !

Here you are Neil, this is the 1921 one, the other one is very similar. There is also another article about a a George Pierotti in being burgled and having his holiday money stolen with a picture, it says he was 79 so is not the one mentioned on here so must be a relative, would she like that as well ?
