Not a fan of his at all but I hope you can all see this, as it's interesting to see, as part of the excavations going on to return a Coventry Cross closer to its original location, they've uncovered some old paving still lying in-situ from Butcher Row - FB video. |

Tried to pop down to Trinity Street on Saturday to photo what they uncovered for the Cross relocation, but unfortunately they've barriered it all around so you can't see anything. |

Not a lot to see Neil, you would think it would be good to allow the public to follow the discovery process. Whose cross is it?

Heathite, it's the location for the new cross but they're digging into remains of Butcher Row as they create the foundations. |

Hello Helen, yes I knew that but thanks for the info.
I took a few pics today, they show a little of what's going on but need to be on top of it to really see and appreciate all that can be learnt.
It's a deep hole and it looks like there are a few layers. |

Don't think you are allowed to use those in the city centre, linda. It's not really large enough to see much detail tbh but may have been of interest to the likes of us on here. |

Decided the best way to capture this for it to be viewable here was via a screenshot of that CCC film. So not the most amount of archaeology but interesting nonetheless to me. I was actually a little surprised by how far west the cobbles appear to be, given I'd read some of the old properties' cellar remains are supposed to be under the flower beds of Trinity Lane.

Since this area is the grassy bit on the west of Trinity Street it does look like it's inside the building area on the west side of Butcher Row. Might it be a courtyard or even a floor?

We've seen this one before but someone's nicely colour-tinted it which really brings the old street back to life.

Similar views before and several of Kimberley's, however CliffB found this cracker which he has sharpened. Never really noticed the butcher's window in the background heading up towards Spicerstoke.

The archway is one of the points of entry into Pope's Head Alley and why the pub, the Pope's Head, is sometimes located on the Great Butchery, Derby Lane, Broadgate and Bayley Lane (Pepper Lane). I suspect that the passage would have felt very Dickensian. |

Any idea of a date for this photo. It's amazing. |

It would take some working out, Linda, as the area had a fish shop on the corner and a butcher in that shop for some time. The picture below is looking from the other direction, from an old family's photo in the Telegraph but there are differences, eg shop sign. Obviously they're pre-demolition for Trinity Street.
