I found this batch of old RENT BOOKS up in my loft, that all date from 1922 - 1943 ! They are from a House & Estate Agent called THOMAS BAND, who according to the front of the books, were origionally in Little Park Street, but by 1923, had moved to Quinton Road !!!
The Books are for a property in East Street (1922 -1929) and from 1930 to 1943, for a property in Days Lane !!! It says in them, that its tenants were paying: 4/7 Per Week, including 10d Per Week for Rates & Water !!!

Hi. I am new to the forum and I was interested to see your post as my great grand-parents (Albert & Matilda Mazey) lived at Waverley Buildings, 24a Days Lane during this period. I would be really grateful to know if you have anything with this address on or in their name ? Regards Historylady.

Hi, that is quite interesting to me as my grandparents met whilst living in East Street and Days Lane. My grand-father lived in Days lane and my grand-mother lived at 12 East Street.
Do the books you have show any of this info?
My grand-mother was Laura Annie RUSSELL, and my grand-father was John Henry JONES. Actually he was born Henry Neville JONES but changed his name and age in order to join up when he was too young.
It may be that the name on the rent book is Samuel Henry RUSSELL as he was head of household then, either way it should be a RUSSELL at No.12 East Street.
I hope you can say one way or another, thank you.

Could Thomas Band Estate Agents have become part of Band Hatton solicitors? |

They each existed as separate entities in the 1930s, at different addresses, so it seemed unlikely
I've now looked further back, the Band in Band Hatton was Charles James Band - searching his family in successive censuses, he had no direct relative named Thomas, so I presume there is no link - I've gone back to their respective fathers, and they were not brothers |

I took the original post to mean the rent books are for a total of two properties, one in East Street and one in Days Lane over a period of years. It looks like Frank Croom (or something like that) is the renter for several of the years at least at 16 in Court 3, East Street, The other property appears to be 36 Days Lane and I can't make out the name but it could be Croom again with a different first initial. Perhaps the original poster could confirm this or someone with better eyesight than mine can decipher the writing! |

Re: Rent books, maybe this is the chap. See Number 34.
The image is taken from a 1935-6 Coventry directory but Day's lane is near to East Street.
It's an unusual name but it seems to be worthy of consideration.

Looks like it is Frank Croom on the rent book then. I am very envious of that directory btw - which one is it? |

Yes, I bet it's him. As I said before, my grandparents lived in Day's Lane and East Street so I'll be going over to Brum library to look at their directories. They don't have as many as Cov but they let you take photographs in Brum without having to pay. The fees in the Heritage centre are an insult.
I wonder if and when we are integrated with Brum whether we'll have the same privileges as Brum.
This is the Directory. I bought it in Leamington at least 20 years ago from Pegasus books. I think that's the name anyway, it cost me £60 then!
Are there any particular pages/streets you would like to see?

Hi Heathite I remember Mrs Oswin who ran the newsagents at No 2 Days Lane in the 60s and her son who I think was a bricklayer she must have been in her 70s or 80s at the time amazing to see they had the shop in 1935 so must have witnessed the devastation of the blitz as there was no properties left between their shop and the Vauxhall Tavern we lived at 102 East Street which my parents ran as an off-licence till the late 60s when it was demolished we believe it was a bakery at some time in it's life but we've never been able to find anything about the shops history is there any information in your directory about this property? I would be very grateful if you could help. |
