In my travels round the city I'm now looking at Well Street.
I think I've got pictures of what was in the sections marked red. I'm guessing that the section in green is the top picture of this pair
Well Street 1
I don't know where the bottom picture is located and top one of the next pair, though I do know they are next to each other.
Well Street 2
Anybody got any thoughts or pictures of the missing bits? |

Ok, I've now got pictures of most of the south side, with a few gaps where pictures don't quite meet. I've got some aerial views of the missing stretches of the north side but I could still do with some better shots of those between the old gate and two buildings to the right of Chapel Street.
PS the two un-located pictures above were (I think) roughly opposite Chapel Street. |

I honestly can't remember whether any of these cottages on the corner of Well Street and Upper Well still survived when I lived in Bond Street in 1959? Contrary to appearances though, the three-storey houses and off-licence on the corner of Bond Street and Upper Well Street (in the background) were fully occupied for some years after this picture was taken:

Hi Dutchman,
I think the block on the left in this photo might have replaced them.

Hi Helen
Not 'replaced', the Dormer cottages are to the left of the two-story buildings in what I now consider to be Upper Well Street, hidden from view by the topshops in the foreground.
There's a clearer view of them in Image reference EPW053103 at Britain From Above

Thanks,
I thought that first and then talked myself out of it because I thought the curve of the road at that point didn't seem acute enough to match the photo and I didn't think the corner of Upper Well Street and Bond Street (with OXO written on it) would be visible. The alternative theory I considered was that the photo was reversed and the corner was on Well Street and Bond Street but then the slope goes the wrong way.
The funny little indent in the building line doesn't appear until 1937ish, at which point there is a gap to the left of those newer two storey buildings. |

I've found an unidentified photo on this link. Might it be Well Street?
I've used this link to compare.
The jettied building and the square archway may be the same. I could do with some help to check it out. Was there a school in the vicinity as there's mostly children in the unidentified one?
I don't suppose it's a barrel-organ covered up in the background!
My second option was 'New Buildings'? |

Yes Foxcote, they are the same bit of street. They're on the south side of the road. In the second picture the building on the right is the Pheasant Inn. The square arch isn't the one on the left it's up the hill in the taller building. You can just see a lamp. |

Well researched both, especially as Pictures of Coventry wrongly gives the location as being on the north side of Well Street!

This a rare view of the gas showroom from the Well Street side:

Going back to Dutchy's photo, that is one heck of a long ladder leaning on the showroom wall in Well Street.

Would Dutchman or anyone have a memory of Wycombe Hall, Upper Well Street, which I believe would have been owned by Laxon's wholesale grocer? It was on the left towards the top so far as I recall and was the hall used by the Christadelphians. I attended my school friend's baptism by immersion when we both were at Junior Tech in the 1950s. Would love to see a photo. I seem to think the doorposts were 'barley-sugar twists'. |
