So much has been destroyed pre, during and post war, it's always a surprise to find a building in real life. At the early stage of trying to pinpoint locations the developers were knocking old buildings faster than I could register where they were. The Peacock in Gosford Street vanished between Google Street View updates. Though I found that it reappeared for a while if you came out of Far Gosford Street. You can still see the back of it if you come out of the car park entrance next to where it was. That whole area is still pre demolition on Street View. Which is a bit freaky if you didn't know the area. |

I see what you mean Helen, I just had a lovely nostalgic (virtual) wander around the back of the Peacock |

Bit late to the party but I recognised that straight away as near to me - didn't the building on the left latterly become (further down) part of the Technical College annexe?
Thanks to Dean Nelson for this one.

Neil. You posted that image in the Technical College thread (post #50), and there was quite a lot of discussion about the building |

The building on the right is what remained of Argyle House. The bays have gone and the door is different but there are some similarities to tie the two together. |

Ah Winfray, I wasn't in there much during my tech time, mainly exams.
Friends who were in there a lot said it was very handy for a swift pint in the Hen and Chicks between lessons. |

Was the tower reduced in size in the 60s/70s for some reason?

Yes, the tower was reduced in height.
I seem to remember the tower needed some expensive maintenance and the church couldn't afford this. As an alternative, part of the tower was removed and then the structure was rebuilt to be shorter.
I can't remember the exact date, but I think it was the very late 1970s or very early 1980s. |

I'm sure I was once told that the tower was damaged by a barrage balloon cable.
Never looked to confirm it though.... |

We have had a shot of that terrific clock before (on another thread which I couldn't locate, mods!) however this is taken from Queens Road I believe with Warwick Road going across left to right. I think that's St Patrick's Road ahead.

St Patrick's Road top left, Eaton Road top right, Warwick Road left to right

Great period shot of the Butts Works, later Winfray Building / Tech Annexe, as per my earlier post #18.
