Congratulations both! Clearly it is not the street known as Hill Top but an area behind the rear garden of The Conservative Club building in Priory Row - it seems that New Buildings not only ran in an arc from the top to the bottom of Trinity Street but also linked with the lower part of Hill Top, and that is where the image was taken I am so very pleased that this has been solved Cheers

The three buildings on the left - a small shed like building with a sloping roof; a larger two storey building with a drain pipe between it and the taller building next door. And the building against the wall with the sloping gable. The camera looks from the road New Buildings towards the wall of the Con Club. I think Anne nailed it.
Excellent work Anne and Helen! Thumbs up In the bottom left corner of Anne's aerial photo is, I've just realised, the old Exchange & Mart top-shop building - which means that the old photo on the right was taken from fairly near to the Priory Visitor Centre, but looking in a slightly different direction....

So sorry to have played you all up with the initial 'mystery photo'. What an interesting path it took though, so thanks to all of you for the fantastic outcome Thumbs up

On my way this morning to meet up with a fellow forum member, I walked up part of Hill Top and then cut across towards Priory Place, in an effort to try an get as close as possible to the position of this photo These are my results The building with the scaffolding erected was the Conservative Club in Priory Row Thumbs up

That's got to be pretty darned close Cliff Thumbs up It must have been strange standing there in 2013 trying to imagine what would've been around you all those years ago. Of course, the photo I showed above was taken back in 2004, so I only included it as an example of standing "somewhere near" the spot. What a super then & now pair these two make!

Thank you Midland Red for going to the trouble to do that. I wonder if you could email me a copy of the photo to put in the album with the black and white picture.

Just to add to this - Richard Fulford took this superb shot of Hill Top for the True Coventarian Facebook page and has kindly agreed for me to show it here! Theres a little debate about what the conicle mouldings were for at the floor/wall edge?

I always thought the mouldings were to prevent cart wheels scraping the brickwork.

Come to think of it the archway entrances under many Coventry pubs had them too! (The pubs were built to serve the once-thriving wagon trade).

Hi all, Wave The accurate comment by Dutchman also explains why Coventry did not want the railway invasion. This is why Coventry never had a serious railway network & the main station kept outside of the city.

I just wondered if any of the forumites remember the establishment which was situated about halfway down Hill Top known as Bardsley House? I'm talking quite a few years ago, probably around the 1972-74 period. As 6th formers at KHVIII several of us would journey down to Bardsley House during the lunch period (12.30-2.00pm in those days!) where a very attractive young lady would cook us all chips for about 10p a portion! I'm not sure who was responsible for the running of the place, Council? Church? Charity? I think there was a table tennis table in the room but not much else. I don't even know whether it was open during the evening, but it was certainly well received by us 6th formers at lunchtimes. Any memories that members can recall would be most welcome. Thumbs up
