Hill Street

Hi Linda. Spon Street to the left, Hill Street beyond to the right and Fleet Street behind the camera to the right. Originally Fleet Street ended at the left end of the church, where the Spon Street Gate was located but I'm not sure where the join was at the time this photo was taken. The photo is looking roughly west.

From the background of a drawing of Greyfriars Green that Neil linked to. From the right - St John's, Leigh Mills and St Osburg's before they built the spire. Just goes to show how much of the city was visible in the early days.

While looking for something else, several pictures turned up of a court in Hill Street. By coincidence I'd just bought a watercolour of the same view. It would be court 2, behind the shorter building on the street view on the right of this group. One of the secrets to the Board of Health map is the dots and numbers, which identify where the doors were. This area was demolished to make way for Corporation Street. The first picture is looking due north. The second is looking south west. The third is looking east from the Bablake School courtyard.
