Hello. The Council is considering a planning application to build 700 plus flats on the old gas board site - which has an entrance on Hill Street, Coventry. It seems that entrance (they have two others on Abbotts Lane) is to be used by the bulk of the residents traffic. Given that the large protected church on Hill Street is a busy, well-used one for weddings, funerals and services, plus there is a busy school next to it, the pollution levels and traffic flow will be massively increased. Hill Street and Upper Hill Street were one thoroughfare until the Ring Road was built. I believe there are plans afoot to close Barras Lane and re open Upper Hill Street onto the Ring Road. Does anyone know anything about it and whether it is viable given how much more pollution and traffic will flow through. It seems to me it will be mayhem and will become an increasingly dangerous road for the many walkers and cyclists who frequently use the road to go into the town centre. Question |

Hi Fred,
'Midlands Today' did a feature, a months back now, regarding the proposed introduction of a congestion charge in Coventry. The main thrust of the feature was to report the difference of thinking between the Government, who were seemingly pushing for a charge to be introduced, and Coventry City Council, who were arguing that there were more effective ways to control traffic in the city and thus reduce congestion and pollution etc.
During the feature, the reporter was filmed stood alongside the ring road at the cul-de-sac of Upper Hill Street, next to the Hill Street pedestrian bridge (over the ring road), and he did state that one of Coventry City Council's proposals was to open up that very road onto the ring road!?
At the time, I dismissed the idea as daft simply because of the close proximity of both the Holyhead Road AND Radford Road junctions - but, maybe there's more to it? OddSock: Particularly interested in the family surnames Cowley, Shale, & Pratt in Coventry!

Another cracker from Dean Nelson on FB. I know The Newdigate carried on regardless into the 60's minus its upper floor but had not seen this one of the damage before, plus the rear of the properties that were on Corporation Street at the time.

Thankfully they didn't change much from what was left of Leigh Mills for The Gatehouse Pub but here's a good one before it was converted -
It's a shame the Mill went - I do remember the area before the Multi Storey car park went up - just wished I had taken more notice of those other buildings that were still there into the 80s -
That one compares nicely with this one from BFA from one of the other threads - you can see what went for the car park.

Good to know at least that the row of buildings where you circled in yellow still stand - the corner one being Artisan now. |

Good hunting this morning. FB request to locate this shop - It's listed as No.7 Hill St in the 1927 Directory -
That southern end and eastern side was hit during the Blitz (although the Newdigate battled on into the 60's minus its upper floor!) You can see No.7 here on the right.
Mr Nettleton appears to have moved on according to the directories sometime in the 30's though -

Good hunting indeed! You can see on the map that number 6 was slightly recessed compared to number 7. The little dog on the right is in that recess. |

This one should really go in the Fleet Street thread but I've zoomed it in a little to see the great (though small) capture going up Hill Street -

I need a little more info on this photo. Names of streets left and right and the one were standing on looking at the church I also don't recognize. This really shows my ignorance! |
