Thanks to my FB friend Dean Nelson. I think this is an Historic England image. It's been referenced a couple of times on this thread but I don't think we have seen the image.

Hi All
Has anybody been able to identify on a map of Gosford Street the house numbering and where Jordan Well finished and Gosford Street started? Trying to work out from the 1871 Census for Gosford Street where Court 43 would have been (annotated as 1.43 Court). I am looking at the old Ordnance Survey map Warwickshire XXI.12 Surveyed: 1887 and Published: 1889. My ancestor would have lived in No 8 1.43 Court. I think that is the Jordan Well end of Gosford Street but any clues would be helpful.
Thanks in advance

Gosford Street started at Cox Street on the north and about the same on the south. Court 43 was on the south side of the road, near Jordan Well. It was to the west of a pub called the Sir Colin Campbell however the pub wasn't at the point where it ended up. It was 3 buildings west from the Royal Oak. I'm guessing that house 8 was on the west side of the court, furthest away from the road.

Sorry but it's right at the join of about 4 maps.
A less detailed map that shows the full court. Number 8 looks like the last property in the row. |

Perhaps Court 43 Gosford Street became Whitefriars Street where Whitefriars Street exited into Jordan Well & Gosford Street?
There isn't a Court 43 Gosford Street in the 1911 directory.

Thanks Heathite. At first I thought that court 43 had become Whitefriars Street but it's to the east of that and visible in the first map you posted. The area is covered by factory buildings in the only aerial photo I could find. You can see the narrow passage of court 42 but 43 had been erased. In 1850 the pub was called the Griffin Inn, court 42 was Griffin's Yard and court 43 was Muston's Yard. |

Thank you Helen. My reasoning was based on the fact that Court 43 as shown on the first map is immediately adjacent to the Sir Colin Campbell Inn.
So with the space already there it provides and in fact invites development into a thoroughfare.
But, hey, I'm only guessing, and I can see you have the capacity to view things in far greater detail than moi! |

I made exactly the same mistake until I realised the Sir Colin Campbell had moved. You've no idea how many places I've had to re-evaluate because a pub wasn't where it used to be! It makes using old deeds to place properties a nightmare. |

If you look through this blog recently posted in Rob's member's articles, top of page 11, you'll see the building that fronted court 43. The entrance was the first archway on the left, near the pump.
There is also a painting of court 43 (just includes the window of number 8 but the door was off to the left) in this book I seem to remember. It's not named but it's labelled 'A court behind Gosford Street (from a water-colour by A E Phipson 1897)'. |

Wow.... no words for all the incredible detail that you have provided since I posted my question yesterday. Incredible forum. Thank you all for the map information and pictures as well as explaining the exact location.
Cheers

My paternal grandmother, Lizzie Atkins, was born in Court #3 behind 35 Gosford Street in 1882. Her parents were John Atkins, watch finisher, and Elizabeth Cleaver. They moved at some stage to Herbert's Row, Gulson Road. |
