Was the entry-way that ran from the back of All Saints Church to Townsend fireplaces and then across West Street on to Lower Ford Street between Bookers Cash & Carry and the cafe anything to do with Shut Lane as I recall it was very similar to the one that ran down the side of Astley`s to the dairy. |

That was part of 'All Saints Lane' Mick. The footpath section between West Street and Lower Ford Street was indeed very similar to Shut Lane and Hill Top and had the same 'no vehicles' warning sign at the entrance as the other two footpaths.
It's now covered by Sky Blue Way.

Thanks dutchman I couldn't remember the name of All Saints Lane that used to run at the back of the houses in Oxford Street. I did remember that you once said that was your way home from school many moons ago. |

And another cracker from Tony looking the other way - can anyone help me get my bearings with this one in relation to where All Saints Church is/was? I know there was a hill going up towards Paynes Lane which I think is where this one is looking towards but happy to be corrected.

All Saints Church would have been to your right and slightly behind you. My parents were married there in 1942 and I calculate that the spot at which they were married was probably in the right-hand lane of Sky Blue Way going downhill, just at the traffic lights.

You were able to walk through to Far Gosford Street where the street lamp is on the right of the photo. |

Thanks all - so I think I was right then - I'm pretty sure in that case that those backs of houses on the left are the same ones which are there today in what is now the somewhat smaller remains of the lane. They are the rears of the houses on Oxford Street here.
I wish I could find that pdf had which featured lots of images from around the church - the 'common' ones are all taken from Far Gosford Street and the south side of the church but these were all from the north side in and around All Saints Lane and South Street / West Street. I'll keep looking!
Looking an another old map - is the first picture taken from the east end (Paynes Lane end) looking back down to where the photographer is standing in the second shot? That row of houses in the first image is I think the other end of the row in the second photo on the right? My 1948 map says there was what looks like a sizeable 'Engineering Works' at that end between there and FGS. |

Thanks Anne but I don't think its one of those - I had seen them. The one I'm after had a load of really unusual B&W images from the north side of the church around All Saints Lane / South Street / West Street / Harnall Row etc. I'm normally pretty good with keeping copies of rare images but seem to have lost these ones |

NeilsYard, I am fascinated by the photos of All Saints' Lane, as I doubt I ever walked there, Far Gosford Street being the main road. I remember the church but never went inside. My aunt was a Sunday School teacher there and one of the curates married a nurse from Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital. I have the photo of the wedding as my former wife knew the bride from her time as a nurse in Keresley. When I can find it I will try to upload it as it shows the church in the background. |

This was the interior Prof -
There's a snippet of interesting video here. The start of the video taken on the day we won the Cup shows the whole area just as demolition started to build Sky Blue Way. Most of if has already been cleared but interesting insight nonetheless.

Hoooooray! - Yet another thanks has to go to Anne for prompting me in another thread to check through the Historic England site which led me to finally rediscover the images I've been going on about for an age of All Saints. They were not in a PDF but on there! Here's the church and the one I was looking for taken from South Street looking at the North wall in 1970
Same side again but nearer All Saints Lane itself - I'm sooo glad I found them again!
These are really unusual shots of All Saints as virtually all other known images are from a southerly aspect rather than the north side. |
