Dean Nelson has come up with this cracker on FB - No.50 was just opposite the junction with Dover Street - right where today's Holyhead Rd meets the island over the Ring Road. It's the same property visible in the centre of the previous pic I posted from CD -

Is this Holyhead Road? Its not the toll by Allesley village but looks right looking at the Spire(s) (St Osburgs on the left?) -

Oooh, that's a new one Neil. To me. As a guesstimate I'd think it might be north of the Holyhead road because it looks like it puts Greyfriars to the left of what looks like St John's. I would estimate that it might be more Hill Street direction. I shall have a bit of a think. |

Is there some writing at the top and bottom of the card? Also is there a church on the left of the picture with 2 spires, at the top of the sloping fence? |

This is taken from a book Anne and the writing is on the other side of the page. The two spires are probably St Michael's and Holy Trinity. That's why the angle only works from the west of the city but exactly which direction is more difficult. |

Could it be Hollow Farm off the Radford Road just north of the railway line? That far north puts St Michael's to the left of Holy Trinity, which fits the picture....ish. Here

Hello,
The photos of the cripple clinic on the corner of Dover St, have evoked so many memories for several of us on our forum. The smell of the plaster casting room, the fear of when the the plasters were being cut off either by giant scissors or an electric cutter.
I've said so much of my childhood disability on other topics on here, so no need to repeat.
The window immediately above the entrance door, was the office of Dr. Watson. He retained his title Dr, rather than the title he was awarded of Mr, in much the same way as my one time GP, Dr. White, who like Dr. Watson, was a surgeon.
I've been so fortunate to have received the care & medical expertise of the folk all involved with orthopaedic health care.
Dr Watson, in 1947 was the acting Coventry medical officer for health, who it was that signed my birth mother's post mortem, stating that I would never walk.
Thank you for everyone who has researched or shared memories. Yes, I also went all the way on clinic days on bus No7, from Sewall Highway.
A very small world. |
