Lower Ford Street

Hello all, I thought I'd added some text to this, but it has disappeared. The info from the 1921-2 directory shows number 107 being two doors away from Godiva Street. Godiva Street is now Godiva Place I would suggest. Number 107 is on the right hand side travelling away from the city centre, going toward Gosford Street and Far Gosford Street junction. Does this help?

I've also looked at the 1935-6 directory and here's the details for the same houses. Number 103 is William Franklin, 105 is Edward Munns, 107 is Charles Aston, 109 is Albert George Wiltshire, then Godiva Street to the right, 111 is L Williams, grocer, 113 is Joseph Lee Moulton.

Nope, that was No.111 as shown here on the right next to the junction with Godiva Street: The shop on the left is No.117 and the shops between all odd numbered.

No.107 is second from the left and as you can see is a private residence:

Just to add something noticed in dutchman's first pic and may be useful for someone searching at a later date. The name on the plate above the shops reads Jubilee Terrace

Here's a bit more confirmation. You can see in the 1955-6 directory the listing for the Tongue's ladies' outfitter. Thanks to dutchman it all becomes clearer. I noticed my great grandmother living at no.126. Much much earlier her husband is listed at no.127 on the opposite side and the house is still there.

I was browsing on this wonderful Forum last night and came across the Lower Ford Street thread. My gran and granddad Phillips used to live at No 137 and while we were young and mother worked, gran would look after me and my young sister during school holidays. I remember many of the shops that were along there - and the urinal, which always fascinated me. There was an art shop further up the road that used to have some wonderful paintings on show in the window. I clearly remember the Francis Barnett motorcycle works. Then back down by No 137 the Wiltshires had a little shop selling sweets, I believe, with a bubblegum or gobstopper machine outside. Max Buch cables was also along there before he moved. I was fascinated with the portion of the street directory from the 1950's as I could remember many of the names on it. Mrs Hill and daughter Kathy next door to gran, nosey Mrs Brittain further along, and the dress shop shown as W. Tongue = her name might have been Winifred as that rings a bell. My aunt, who used to live in Wheatley Street, bought No 45 Ford Street, quite near to the post office. The living rooms had the most beautiful carved plaster cornices along ceiling edges, not the naff polystyrene ones we used in the late 60's with the polystyrene ceiling tiles! I vaguely remember Garland's Joke Shop, but my sister and I rarely walked down that side of the road and often used to go down Godiva Street to get to gran's house. Hers was the house I mentioned in another thread where the front room ceiling collapsed one day. It was also the house with the tin bath hung out on the fence in the yard, and the outside loo with cobwebs and spiders in the corners, a good excuse to beat a hasty retreat from the place!

Are you sure it was an art shop Janey or was it a picture framer's? Incidentally, that directory says the odd numbers run from "from Cox Street to Far Gosford Street" when it's clearly the opposite!

Hi dutchman It may have been a picture framers, I can't remember that detail I am afraid, just some of the paintings on show in the window. Before we were married my husband and I said that as soon as we could afford it we would buy the painting of the bullfighter. Of course, we never could afford it and have never been able to find it again now that we can! There was also an outstanding painting of a bright red racing car, by someone called Ashley, I think. Or maybe he did the bullfighter one. We always called it the art shop anyway.

Good morning. Can ask can you help in providing more information on what happened to 107 Far Gosford Street and the Builders Yard of 94 that stood in Godiva Street. Were they lost during the war years or were the premises removed to allow access the Plating Company.

Good afternoon Tony Both survived the war and both were pulled down by the council at some time in the 1970s to create the industrial estate.
