Albany Road / Butts

I seem to remember when I walked from town to The Butts (ONC in business studies day release and a night class of dressmaking) there was a junk shop at the top of a few wide steps, she used to lay stuff out on the steps. Does any one else remember this so I know I am not having a senior moment?

I too did ONC business studies at the Butts and remember the bookshop well. I did the course around 1960/62(?) on day release whilst working at the Co-op. Not sure I remember the junk shop though!!!

Just after you, I was there 1963/64 ! We had an Economics lecturer that was rubbish. The next subject was accounts and the lecturer for that was great. He could explain what the previous lesson was trying to teach us in 5 minutes. We had a nice day out one day to Hams Hall power station!

Went from learning book-keeping in those large rooms with big windows (debit nearest the window) at the Butts to working underground auditing in central Africa, via Lanchester Polytechnic (before it was a university!) If only I'd known then what I know now!!! LOL

Does anyone know exactly where the College Tuck Shop was - as seen here in 1955

Not exactly sure, Neil, but it was on Butts The two images are not related, as the lower one shows the rear of buildings on Mount Street

Here's a map of the area from the 1930s. I would imagine that this row would have been on the north side of the Butts, somewhere between Windsor street and York Street. It is built in the same style as the houses in Thomas Street, Moat Street and Hertford Place.

Yes I have this one from the 1920's but cannot exactly identify which one - The Bygone Spon End Group have been corrected about the Mount Street image (thanks Cliff!). The Tuck was supposedly opposite the College - obviously this photo is pre-Tech but the row should be the same. I'm guessing its the one to the left and over the road from the word 'The'.

Comparing the 2 images, it looks to be the terrace to the right of Hope Street.

Also in the 1920s aerial view on the right is the Alfred Herbert factory at Butts Villas. My Aunt started work there in the 1920s and worked for Alfred Herbert for over 40 years. When she first started she was living with her family in Hertford Place so literally had to cross the road to get to work. She later moved to the Edgwick site where she was a supervisor in the blueprint room, retiring in 1967. In those days Alfred Herbert was the world's leading machine tool manufacturer. I reckon this photo taken today is from about the same spot as the college tuck shop photo!!!

I think you may have been standing on the site of the tuck shop - the road in your photo is the new Butts Road, whereas the old road (Butts) which the tuck shop faced, joining up with Queens Road would be behind you - I think
