Hi Neil, I don't think that's Kirby House, it's the one that became the Castle Grounds. So the building to the left was the building that is still there?

Ahh you are right Helen - that'll teach me for going off what's written on the archives! I was too excited about the image - I was referring to the one in the foreground which would've been on the east side of LPS. |

It's too modern for me to work out but it looks like the right place for the Council buildings. Like Anne I'm hampered by the lack of Old Maps and BFA. |

Thanks MR. The small building between Kirby House and the Register Office is where the town was originally separated from the Park by the Red Ditch. |

One of our fellow members, Ghengis Smith, has done a sterling job restoring that wonderful and rare photo of the corner of Cow Lane, so I'm adding it here at his request. Enjoy....
It's on the Cow Lane thread! |

Another Cliff B smasher. Might be better in a dedicated thread but good shot of the Swift/Coventry Machinists Works (later the Roller Rink!) on Cheylesmore. Makes a good comparison with the earlier war damaged shot in a previous post. I think I've added this one before but it's a better/larger shot.

Pretty much where the police station now stands (it's been discussed on here before, I think). |

Neil, I believe Edwards printers took over the RH side of the building. My aunt (Dad's twin) worked there as a bookbinder. She provided the Orders of Service for my wedding at Stoke Congregational Church. |

What was the building to the right of Kirby House?

It's not Kirby House, it's the Castle. The building to the right was built over a road/drive and I think it was a warehouse but don't quote me. The one to the right of that was an early location for the Coventry Building Society but by the date of the photograph I don't know. Most of those Georgian buildings seem to have been built on silk weaving money and the businesses were tied to the fancy houses. |
