The image has been kicking around for some time and I haven't located it. It's an odd view. There weren't than many cobbled streets left by the war. I did wonder if it was St John Street or New Street but nothing has leapt out at me. |

I looked in the wartime directories and can not find Le Brasseur.
I looked from 1926 to 1937, I cannot look in the 1940 directory as I have crashed my Adobe Acrobat.
I can't find a free Adobe reader now, they are making it web only.
Is it possibly 'masseur'?

I have seen it described as Smithford Street, which I doubt but maybe it's one of the alleys off Smithford? |

I've recovered my pdf reader, could this be the place/location? It's the 1940 Kelly's directory.

They advertised regularly in the CET. They advertised as 112 Little Park Street until towards the end of November 1940. The address was a Birmingham address at the end of November 1940, beginning of December, then the address was 4 Ford Street. |

112 is a possible as I've not looked at that block because it was relatively new. The building in the background could potentially be the remains of the Sword and Mace block. Hmmm, I will investigate. Well done Heathite |

There was a La Brasseur at 90 Worcester Street, Birmingham. This was still cobbled in the 1950's, but I can't find a photo to compare. I think the shop would have been where Debenhams is now. |

Thank you Helen, here's something to help with the relationship between the Sword & Mace and number 112 Little Park Street.
Another image from the 1937 directory, how useful of them to list the streets at the end of the road they were recording

112 LPS would be in view here although that gap was there before the war looking at maps?

The end of LPS kinked to the right as you look at Rob's photo, so was invisible from that angle. I'll hunt down the stretch because I'm sure that I've seen it somewhere.... here's one of them. Pretty sure that this is right. Moulding on the building is right, as is the curve of the road. They've taken off the top of the first two shops.

Hi Neil, the timbered building threw me before Heathite and Anne pinpointed 112 LPS for the Le Brasseur because I couldn't find anything that matched. It had been demolished before any aerial views captured that area post war. The buildings in the distance were part of the court that had the Sword and Mace (a building I'd love to see) as part of it. I think that the standing buildings were the west side, southern end of it. |

I wasn't aware of The Sword & Mace before Helen but must have been the building here next to the Palace Yard entrance (Fred & Rob's Pages say it closed 1905) -

Not exactly next door because there was a narrow passage/court in between. The Sword and Mace Court was court number 3 on Rob's 1914 traffic map scan. The north wing of the court was the original building which is sadly just a stain on the end wall in the LPS photo. |
