Yes, Rob, thank you. Had I had that clearer version then I would not have posted 239 - the picture says the following day, but it was the second day, Saturday.

Depends how you look at it Kaga. The bombing started on the evening of Thursday 14th, but went on into Friday morning. To the press the Saturday would be the next day.

Annewiggy I know, I was there, and yes, that particular shot was the next day, by time, for that particular area was not hit till the early hours of Friday morning. I just wish I could look at back papers of that time. There is something else that people of today do not know about the visit. I tried to find out in the fifties but was politely warned off by the police as a troublemaker. I had no real proof so forgot it. Question for you - how many of those dignitaries that were telling the King what happened were actually in the raid that night, were in the town? And who was missing that should have met him? I don't know, and I've opened my big mouth again. Buckingham Palace was hit eight times during the raids so the King wasn't a stranger to the bombing.

If you want to look at old newspapers Kaga this is the best site, www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk. It is a subscription site but you can just subscribe for a month. I have been using it for about 8 years and am still finding it fascinating.

As the city sets itself up for the City of Culture, as a visitor to your city over many years, I think someone should go round naming things of interest, or daft things like this with nothing to tell you why it's here or what it is. OK I've seen it moved from A to B over the years but it's never had a plaque telling you anything about it. Yes, I have asked on site but no passerby seems to know anything about it. I would say something to do with the Royal Air Force but that's only with looking at it on the previous site before being moved to its new resting place here (? I would just like to know, thank you in advance)

Peter B. You're a gent - thanks I don't think many would know the history of that lump of rock. I did take photo's of it years ago. It was where you said, at the back of the wall. You could only see it if you walked round onto the grass. A fly-wheel - I'll remember that but you must admit it did look like it could have been there to represent the part of a jet engine, with what it was on show with.

Fooled me, can't understand that train of thought. I thought it was a nautilus sea-shell, looks closer to a sea-shell than a modern item. Can't really see why a flywheel represents the jet, flywheels have been about for a thousand years.

It's modern art, modern sculpture, Kaga - not meant to make any sense (not to us oldies anyway)!

It does resemble the shape of a centrifugal compressor from a gas turbine engine if you use a bit of imagination. Certainly not a turbine shape.

Helen - it's the clarity in some of the detail in the newly released Historic England images that is getting me We have seen this one before - some must have made their way out of the collection previously but just look at the detail.
