That must have been very frustrating for the Registrar Janey, he must have known that was going to happen every week. I was married in 1969 and by then the Register Office had moved to Cheylesmore Manor House. If you look at post number 50 in this topic I have put a picture of the Little Park Street Register Office from the newspaper archive.

Can anyone answer the question here. Did not realise the original St Johns street was in a different location which would have been completely underneath the ring road....

Yes, this is Little Park Street looking north. This end of St John's possibly isn't under the ring road (more under one of the access roads/roundabout, it's hard to tell because LPS used to bend) but the other end is. The factory on the left was the one built upon Bridgeman's land and a number of big buildings to the south. I think it was a cycle works, Swift's or Briton? The picture looking through the remains of the Roebuck is looking at the same building. The Roebuck was a few buildings north of the building on the corner. That shop replaced the iconic white timber framed building in the picture with the pump and the woman holding the baby (C05963 and C01899). It was apparently the first Coventry and Warwickshire hospital.

Not completely underneath NeilsYard. I think it ran parallel to Ringway St John's on the north side for a period after the latter was built although all the buildings were still demolished. It was though as you say in a completely different location to the present-day "St John's Street". Smile

Hi Neil Do you know if your photo of LPS was taken on the day after the night of the Blitz? There seems to be a pall of smoke everywhere and the poor people seem to be in shock and they look as if they're trying to retrieve what they can from the buildings.

Hi all Wave I am in awe with the wealth of info that is appearing on these history of streets topics on our forum. I have just enjoyed a refreshing read of both this & the Fleet St topic. Thank you all for all of the time & energy that is going into these fascinating insights to their past times. Cheers

I completely agree with what Philip has said. Piece by piece a picture of our city's past is being put together by such wonderfully enthusiastic members, making the forum so interesting, educational and entertaining for the benefit of potentially millions of people. Many thanks to you all for such dedication. Thumbs up Cheers

Visible opposite the building site is Middlemores the Tudor style building. This was at one time I believe a private girls' school.

When you said it was a big hole MH, I underestimated your definition of big. No chance of any archaeology after that lot. Oh my
