It could be a tad earlier as Kingstone's hasn't been built, (behind the bus), which had re-located there |

I take it, that it's the canal basin buildings up the hill? |

Yes, Helen, they're the warehouses on Leicester Row - you can compare the shape of the buildings with this

That store did not open until October 1971, therefore the c1970 date is about right! |

Cliff's photo is most definitely in Cross Cheaping, 100%. In the side by side comparison below (one of my Cross Cheaping postcards on the left), the end gable, the chimneys, and twin front gables match (No.1) and the jutting out bay 4 doors to the right also matches (No.2). The left photo was taken from across the road, not such an oblique angle, so the perspective differs, but they are most definitely both Cross Cheaping.

Currently available on eBay - 30 Cross Cheaping. Very pricey but one I've never seen before. The Coventry Cross just to the left. Usual disclaimer - nothing to do with me.

I love this scene from another of my favourite old Cov spots - Little Butcher Row looking towards Cross Cheaping. This must be one of the last images of the area before clearance started - dated 1935, a late glimpse of everyday life in an ancient street.
Great find Neil, it doesn't feel as narrow as some pictures in this one. Do we know what the shop is straight ahead on Cross Cheaping?

Hi Osmiroid I'm sure we can work it out. For the record on this thread I'm adding the exit onto Cross Cheaping from that narrow gap on LBR here. This is the best shot I have seen of it which I added some time ago. Those two gents on the right are looking directly east along Little Butcher Row. You can see it came out just by the junction with West Orchard.

Kingstone's Furniture shop, another store which has disappeared. Latterly situated in Bishop Street in the 1970's, just up from the entrance to Silver Street. |

The timbered building just next to LBR was a genuine timber building as far as I can determine but the visible timbers were fake cladding, just like on the Lion Building on Smithford Street. |

Another good pic MR. The area is really perking up, just a few more buildings to improve. I quite like the tower blocks, I just wish they'd not use clashing, primary colour cladding. The one on the left looks more classy but while pleasant, the one on the right won't mix with the black and red colours of the ones to the right of shot. Pick a city wide palette! It's one of the things that separates good looking cities from bad ones. |

A nice clear sunny day, MR and nice to see the clock still hanging there after all this time.
Also, they can change the name of the pub on the far corner as many times as they wish. I will always remember it as The Wine Lodge |
