Hi Covjb, I have this picture, also taken in about 1960, you can see the name over the door in this one so I thought you might be interested. I also notice that windows on the top floor are bricked up.

The photo at the top of this page must have been taken in the early 1960s as that end of Much Park Street was blocked-off a couple of years after Ringway St John was built in 1960. It's actually the first photo I've ever seen of that end of the street Thumbs up

Welcome Covjb35 and thank you for posting such wonderful photos Cheers Interesting to see The Greyhound, and also the newsagents which used to deliver to us - I always wondered the name, and your photo has given a lead for me to find that it was C F Frapwell - and it appears in the 1912 Kelly's Directory at 119 Much Park Street, so it really was a long-established business PS I've modified the thread title as it look like expanding into a discussion about the street rather than the building itself Thumbs up

I note that The Greyhound was 118 Much Park Street, so I wonder if MPS retained consecutive numbering rather than odds and evens? Dutchman!

Re: Much Park Street and Franklins works I have checked my negative sequence and I have 11 images of Much Park Street, some include the Franklin works. The sequence runs from 9A to 19. Comparing the OS 1:2500 sheet revision for 1937 to my sequence of photographs seems to indicate that the images are right - it is just possible to count the number of properties from (and including) Whitefriars Gate to the Franklin building, and I think they tally. The OS sheet marks the entrance passage with a cross (X), and the Whitefriars Gate is indicated by 'GATE'. My photographs showing the passage and the workshops appears to fit the map depiction. "Dutchman" mentions the bricked up windows in his photo, so what about the buildings height discrepancy - front to back? - My only suggestion I can come up with is a roof pitch difference reflecting an apparently higher front facing, compared to the back? I might post a couple or three photos of the MPS area. I am unsure of the location but someone might know. John

Yes it did. So did all the other streets in that area.

That was Anne! Smile The blocking-off I referred to was across the end of the street where it used to join the ring road. Smile

Thanks D - I have ancestors who lived at No.83 - do you have any indication of where that was, please?

No 83 was mid-way between the Black Prince and the Admiral Lord Rodney in what is now Short Street: Old-Maps.co.uk

What a terrific set of photos Thumbs up Thanks for sharing. It shows there was still life in the old street post-war right up until the bulldozers moved in Sad It really has had its heart ripped out and is little more than what could be described as a passage-way through-road now. My lovely old dad used The Greyhound as his local before he met my mum late 50's/early 60's so it's a real insight into how it was for me - though I used The Greyhound myself right up until the end-years. You'd struggle to say what there actually is in that street now apart from Whitefriars Gate - I'm sure that would have gone before now too if the Council had its way.

Brill! Thanks D - very much appreciated - I always thought of it being in what we now know as MPS when all the time it was in what we know as Short Street Cheers

To me, that's the most interesting photo of them all, seeing that end of MPS - thanks for all the photos, Covjb35 Thumbs up

Hello again - more photographs, some marked with a question mark but I believe all were taken around the backs of the houses, general views in various directions.

More winners Covjb35 Thumbs up That last one was taken much earlier than the others, circa 1962. The junction with St John's Street remains but the Horse & Jockey which was once on the corner has already been demolished.
