Whilst looking at Rob's excellent Street Views section Queens Road - is it me or has the Church Tower in today's view sunk/had its head chopped off?!?

Yes - about 30 years ago. I think they had repair problems and decided the best way to deal with them was to chop the top off.

The house on the corner of Queen Victoria Road was that of Dr. Rollason, well known in the 50's in Coventry. He was a consultant gynaecologist but also had his GP surgery there. His receptionist was a very smart lady in a white coat, Miss McDonald. I was sometimes in the waiting room (front room of house where I saw copies of Punch magazine with that fascinating cover) with my grandmother.

Hello all, I just came across this photo labelled 'Possibly Coventry'. I presume it's Queens Road given the shop sign, possibly the Upper York Street corner. Can anyone confirm please?

It's an odd set of features. The building on the left side of the road opening is a bay on an extended front. I couldn't find anything to match it. The Queens Road Supply Stores is an odd building too. Is it in a directory?

Adverts give the address for the Queens Road Supply Stores in the CET as The Butts

Could this be the row of houses with the windows in the roof ?

That's it. I never thought to look at the present day. Roll eyes The building to the left in the old photo was called Argyle House and got a side extension some time between 1889 and 1906 when it appears on the maps. By the 1914 map it had been swallowed by the Machine Tool Works next door. So the photo was probably some time between 1889 and 1914.

Wow I see it now, I didn't think to compare the scene to today's buildings. The store hasn't changed that much has it, a variety of paint jobs and the glazed structure upstairs is now covered with tiles. Thanks ladies. Thumbs up I will now look at my parade photos and see if I can find this one, the outfit looks quite distinctive to me.

I was surprised as well, I only looked at Google Maps to get my bearings on the relationship between Queens Road and the Butts and spotted the houses with the dormer windows. Those houses must be over 100 years old so it's a wonder they have survived! I also didn't think they had dormer windows in the early 20th century, could even be late 19th.
