I remember the Church Bookshop! Owner or assistant, a dark haired lady with a bun, spectacles and a floral button-through overall! |

I was so lost in the books, Prof, I hardly remember who worked there but I never came out without anything. I am still the same in any bookshop. Drag me out if you can. |

The Church Bookshops in Coventry have been discussed on several occasions. A check via the "Search" facility will find them in the "Shops of Yore" and "Albany Road / Butts" threads |

There's a well known Sadler image of the Geisha Cafe on Hertford Street - we now know this was taken on July 28th 1962 as a few other negs were in a tiny envelope, including this corker! More on Cov Dig.

I noticed the Hector Powe shop, they had another one at 8 The Bull Yard at least up to 1970, they also had shops in other cities.

The church was built between 1889 and 1891 and since the only transport visible is horse drawn I'd say that the photo wasn't much later. What I hadn't noticed before was that it was built on the plot of the original Reform Club, which subsequently moved a couple of doors up the road. |

HelenF, You mention the Reform Club, I believe that became the Food Office in 1940. In the early 1950's I recall being a restless toddler in the queue to collect ration books Like "K" in the "Rover Showroom/Food Office/..." topic I can recall the inside, but my fragmentary memory pictures the outside as Victorian Gothic. Does anybody know if the Food Office moved from Hertford Street (Warwick Row) before rationing came to an end? Question |

Hi Choirboy. The Reform Club was next door, see here.
I don't know if the food office moved later. |

Thank you Helen, I recall when it was Foulkes but my memories don't connect them with the Food Office. Of course, in the early '50's something had changed between every visit to the City Centre making memories a jumble. |
