West Orchard

Hi, this insurance map from 1897 may help with locating the Coventry Perseverance Co-op Society. A part of the index is shown which has the 'block and map sheet number '. So it would appear the building is on the East side of West Orchard.

To continue, here's an image taken from Spennell's 1912. The bordered insert is from the same directory but in a different place.

Thanks Heathite. Several Co-op buildings were on the east side but it seems they had buildings on the other side too. The book Anne mentioned has photos of all of them. I've placed all the ones on the east side but hadn't bothered with the other side. It seems to fit with the aerial photos.

Great one that Neil. You have completed your 'tick' card and now we have to start again. Why are the old photos more interesting than the present day ones. Thanks for all your pics you post to us.

Thanks Dream - not 'my' photos as such but I really like to share lovely old Coventry images that I come across to fellow Cov-lovers! They never fail to amaze me in what a fantastic place it was.

I think this shows the Boots building on the corner of Broadgate and West Orchard but I'd not seen it in such clarity before.

Great photo. They rarely show the West Orchard side. What was the celebration do you think? Somebody's coronation?

That's George VI's crest on the upper floor window so I'm guessing his Helen - that was May 1937. Is it me or with that roof and attic windows the building looks French/Parisian.

One of those - when it's gone, it's gone - so grab a copy while you can. It's a Dr Troughton sketch of a court on the south side of West Orchard looking east. It looks across the backs of 19-23 (see Fire Insurance maps) but an earlier version of the buildings than drawn in those. Visible on the Board of Health maps because of the funny slanting building.

Just replaced that photo from my comment above as the old link seemed to have gone. I'm sorry to say that I think this might be just outside it after you know when.
