I stand to be corrected Norm but we were with the Economic up until 74' (our first home) and I am sure it was in the High Street and my sister in law worked there, however, memories do play tricks.
I think that the Coventry Economic was based in Little Park Street in the 60s/early 70s, in the building that is now the Earl of Mercia pub.
A schoolmate of mine had a father who was their computer expert, in what must have been the very early days of computers. He was certainly based there at that time. He used to give us lifts into town in his Morris 1100 and we would get the bus from there to school.
I'm not sure exactly when, but I seem to recall the High Street building was purpose built, possibly after the Economic took over the Provident and became the Coventry Building Society. |

You are probably right, MR. I've looked at Google Streetmaps and it was the more modern 4-storey building to the left of it. I have a feeling it was their head office although possibly not a public access branch. It was possibly abandoned when they opened their purpose built place in High Street. |

Just as an update for this topic, here is a picture of the cellars
and the Lloyds Bank at its newer home in the 1930's.
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

So there are two images on the Pictures of Coventry website that refer to Higginbottom's on the High Street. Sadly I don't think that it's on the street itself but a block at 90 degrees to it on the south side. I believe it was the block between the Craven Arms and the Rose and Crown and behind number 27/28. The image below shows what it looked like from the east side. By the time the aerial photo was taken the block had been knocked down up to a second block further south. New extensions had been added. Does anyone know anything about Higginbottom's and or do you think I've got the right location?

In at least 1921 the bank at number 8 was where Midland Red shows it on the north side of the High Street but at that time the building was about 2/3 of the size. It later absorbed number 9. This picture shows how it looked (right side of the photo) before the remodelling.
