I've pinched this one off the web to show Earl Street today - might come as a surprise to some. That's the Assembly Festival Gardens in place of the old Civic Centre block.

This one of Wheelers has been seen before but not with being able to zoom in to get the detail! -

Searching in the National Archives, came across this interesting little comment in reference to a document dated 1677. It is a melancholy thought that Palace Yard is still suffering to decay. It would be a worthy task to repair and preserve it for future generations of Coventry Citizens. It is nice to think they were thinking about us.

Another new view to me c/o John Miles and his Visit Historic Coventry FB page. It's Earl Street west - I think you can see the Council House on the right with the bank behind. It must be that section in post #55, where the Prince of Wales/later Edward VIII visits and Gibberds is visible behind, right at the western end near to the LPS junction. Sad

I've noticed that in this photo and another with a similar subject that there is 'photoshopping' in the rubble. I wonder if it is modern, to remove writing or old to remove horrific details?

I hadn't noticed that, Helen.

If you look on the left at what looks like a pipe or length of wood, you see a horseshoe of what looks like brick just above the bend. That shape is repeated twice below the bend at a slight angle. Then other features are duplicated in the same area, including the bottom end of the beam.

Yes, Neil. Top left is Midland Bank aka The Earl of Mercia (you might find Philip in there!). The "box" van is on the corner of Hay Lane, which is where the King was photographed, with Anslow's shop beyond the van.

It's not a very "new" one to me - it's from my Blitz aftermath page, which has been there since September 2007! Wink

Very observant, Helen, you did well to notice that! It's actually neither of those reasons, though, and happily especially not the second reason. I have the original War Illustrated magazine from 20th December 1940, and when you see the page below, you'll see why I had to "fill the gap"!

Hi Rob and great pics, thanks. Looking at the lorries being loaded got me wondering. Does anyone know where the hundreds of tons of rubble were dumped?

Mick, I know a lot of Blitz rubble was put on Lake View Park, the open space next to Four Pounds Avenue.
