Hi Flapdoodle, so did I, but this factory was postwar, built in a forest in East Germany, albeit we visited it from Rolls-Royce after the re-unification of Germany.

Oh my Yes, shadow factories were built farther out from the town, they also did night shifts. So shift workers had farther to travel, so let's say forty minutes night and morning, five nights a week, every week, adds up to a lot of hours, lot more expense, so they picked up mates to share the cost. But the big complaint I heard was from wives, so many evenings sitting alone, there should have been a cruelty clause in the marriage. Wink

It would have been a bigger complaint I would have thought from those wives sitting alone evenings, days, weekends, who didn't see their husbands for months, even years, who were away fighting for their country, as opposed to those having to travel a bit farther to work in a factory!

That it would, but the shadow factories were still there in the sixties, but war was something we all understood, men had no choice, but again, peacetime?
