This is the Rex in 1937 before the matching shops and offices were built on either side of it: In this 1950 view of Corporation Street looking towards Hales Street you can see the gap in the shops and offices where the Rex used to be: The gap became the Rex Market between 1953 and 1958.

Dutchman, can't argue with that, any chance you could find out what picture was about to be shown? I can't do it from down here on the cliff top, and I'm not good with this machine, I was about fourteen when it got bombed so I am interested in this forum. thank you.

Very unlikely I'm afraid Kaga Sad Someone would need to find a press cutting with an advert for that week or a photo of the cinema taken the same week to prove it beyond reasonable doubt.

Thanks for the pictures about the Rex dutchman. Thanks to you to annewiggy for the paper cutting, someone had promised to take me to see the film and poof it was gone, it was ten years or so before I eventually saw the film.

I would like to apologize if I have misused this forum, but how else could I have got the answer, but I was dead right about what I saw seventy-four years ago, and to me Dutchman and Anne have just kicked Dementia right out of the ball park. Now with all the cellars and vaults you are finding in the old Cov, then you can start to believe that the story of scores of rats seen swarming down Trinity Street one-hour after the start of the bombing could possibly be true. Thanks once again Dutchman and Anne.

I have posted this before, but this is a film of the opening of the Rex. The caption reads 1939, but I believe it opened before that - Pepper Lane looking towards High Street?

Generally places are open before the 'official' opening. The official opening generally requires a celebrity to perform the ceremonials
