I have put the following website together and would love to add a photo of the old Coventry MacFisheries to it. Does anyone have one, or can someone lead me to one. Thank you, Colin |

Re the engraving around the seat. I seem to remember that it read 'To the memory of Christopher Cash, inventor of the captive bolt pistol for humane animal slaughter' (or something very similar). I've read somewhere that it's the same Christopher Cash as the name-tape/ribbon-weaving company. Always thought it was a weird thing to engrave round a public seat in Smithford Way. |

We have already mentioned in another topic about the Phoenix Levelling stone placed in 1946 as the starting point of the re-development, but was it ever moved from another location? I did read somewhere that it was moved, or may just have been re-laid.
The present location of the levelling stone is I believe only a few inches from the original setting. I remember it being repositioned as apparently the centre point did not line up with the Cathedral Spire.

The trouble is the Coventry shop was hidden behind a water feature and tucked underneath a walkway so it was very difficult for anyone to photograph the frontage as you can see from this view. |

He was a cousin of Joseph Cash, and was responsible for the introduction of the name tapes most of us remember from days gone by |

Construction of the West Orchards Shopping Centre following the demolition of the car park. This is probably taken from Smithford Way - looking across to 'Nobbys Place".

The more I look at this now the more I fail to understand the logic behind the decision to not use Smithford St and move it a few degrees purely to align perfect E-W.
Keeping that route open would have made the whole thing easier and kept Spon St more financially active still being somewhat on a through route. Just widening it to, say, parallel with the end of Hill St would have still provided the opportunity for a view of the cathedral spire (ironically now more covered than ever) in one direction, but also a view of St Johns in the other.
Taking things a bit further attach Hill St-West Orchards-Priory Row to have the two churches visible, and turn the large area inbetween into a massive boulevard, possibly incorporating green areas in between. I think that'd have looked much nicer and could have aided retail more than what actually got build. You build somewhere that's nice to be and people visit and stay longer. |

I only passed this space the other day, in its place a fairground ride, class taken away and cheapness in replacement was the thought that ran through my mind even with the other fountain just yards away from it. That includes taking away the stairs which looked so grand, now a caterpillar an eyesore, serves no purpose for a wheelchair either.

I remember that as being anything but classy, it was all quite decayed and run down when I came here, and the stairs were pointless as there was nothing on the upper level. I don't know why they didn't take away the whole upper level when they revamped it.
Great photo! I think the public art was good (and classy).

I still don't like it. I don't like shopping precincts at all, although it's not really a shopping precinct anymore, is it? They've torn out all the innards and removed the concept of a series of squares and made it into something more like a pedestrianised street, just with a few bits of clutter left over from when it was a 'precinct'.
