A pedestrian crossing where the Canal Basin bridge is on the ring road, what a joke!
Yes the hospital needs looking at, how stupid to have one way in and out unless you have a helicopter, my partner has worked there for 25 years on the wards and now in the operating theatres and does stupidly timed shifts where she comes home at 10 pm and is back up at 5 am, and works 11 hour days but has to pay for her yearly registration and car parking in the very place she works, it's a disgrace. A pedestrian crossing on a road? Wow, surprised people are so angry about it - oh, I know why they are, because drivers expect to be able to go everywhere unhindered. They think it's their right. Well, guess what? It isn't, and these dreadful road systems that gave cars and drivers priority in urban areas are being dismantled. Good. Cities are about people and streets, not selfish drivers wanting their route unhindered.

It's a ring road for God's sake, made for the flow of traffic and it works well if used properly, people have gone over and under it since it was built, you stick a pedestrian crossing on it in rush hour and the flow will stop, it's not rocket science. Triumph - 'The Best Motorcycle in the World'.

Also Flapdoodle in your perfect word why don't we get rid of the ring road and have all the traffic going through the city again eh?
Our ring road is one of the best from getting from all opposite points of the compass to another. Triumph - 'The Best Motorcycle in the World'.

Like the people that have fallen/been pushed off the bridge? Or the kids that threw stuff off it at cars? Or the people who have used it to protest and ended up shutting that section of the ring road for hours?
Yeah, that bridge has never, ever had any problems has it! |

No, that's a nonsense argument. You can still bypass the city centre using a ring road, but you can also have it so it doesn't create a barrier to people wanting to go into the city centre.
The problem is too many people think it's something it isn't. It is NOT a motorway. It's a 40mph dual carriageway A road designed to allow traffic to travel around the city centre instead of through it. NOWHERE does it say it should do this unhindered.
Similar roads include Four Pounds Avenue, London Road, even the A45. ALL of these have at-level pedestrian crossings. In fact I often see people crossing every one of these without even using the crossings. Are there constant injuries and fatalities on these? Should we call for all of these to be replaced by bridges? No. It is a problem that doesn't exist and wouldn't at this crossing either. So there could be a 20 second wait at the lights? You may not have noticed but 50 yards further up there are more lights that make you wait that long anyway.
Send out more pedestrian crossings. Walk over the road round. Hang those who talk of flyovers (preferably from the bridges they consider to be so vital)!

Does that mean this bridge over the ring road will be pulled down as well replaced by a road crossing for safety reasons, as stuff can be thrown from this bridge too.
As you can see there is no wheelchair access either.
Like the road crossing at Longford, I would challenge any councillor or MP to cross one of these crossings in an electric wheelchair, which can only do a certain speed and in most cases not enough room from traffic if they are stuck on centre traffic lights and see if they feel safe.

Your second photo clearly shows the wheelchair ramp at one end and this is view at the other side, again clearly showing the wheelchair ramp.

I came from a different way by the stairs so I didn't get to see an entrance for wheelchair access which seems to be set back a way. I still challenge councillors, MPs and designers to cross these road crossings especially most that have small middle traffic lights, I admit the ones by the Navigation are ok but some others are not. |

Would you care to elaborate? If you want to call it nonsensical at least back up the statement with some facts. These are all things that have occurred. People have died falling from this bridge. The section of the ring road has had to shut for hours because of incidents on it. It must be a rare thing to know what will happen in the future but not what has happened in the past
It provides far more scope for problems than a pedestrian crossing. I doubt kids will use a pedestrian crossing to stop cars and chuck stuff through windscreens from the middle of the road! Or people will use it to throw people onto the road or perform acts of protest.
Although Morgana is wrong when she says that they don't have disabled access, it's far from ideal (and I wouldn't want to use some of those ramps in a normal wheelchair - you'd be knackered) and must add at least five minutes onto a journey for them, when they could just cross over the road! All so some people in cars won't have a couple of minutes max added to their drive (assuming that someone is using it at the time)The main scope for problems of a pedestrian crossing would be caused by motorists driving like idiots and treating it like a motorway. Anything that breaks that misconception should be welcomed.
Although you haven't yet argued with my statement that the way people perceive the ring road is wrong and changes should be made to other similar roads..On 9th Feb 2015 4:12pm, AD said:
