I recall the coal men Lenton & Bray sure they were either twins or brothers.
An advert here for "LENTON & BRAY"!

They are still going and now called "Wentworth Fuels". The owner is still a Bray.
We've had a few chats as his uncle had a small holding behind Hurst Rd in Longford at the rear of my grandparents' house.
He keeps his dad's trilby on the coat stand in the office, though his dad's long gone.

There was also an old Bedford bus that used to park at the top of Marler Road, just by Charter Avenue, that also was a mobile shop. I seem to remember that their name was Murphy. Anyone remember? I guess it was early 1960s. |

Anyone remember Fred and Josie, husband and wife, who each had a milk round in Canley? Josie covered the top half of Canley and Fred did the bottom half. I used to work for Fred delivering milk to doorsteps in the 1960s, an hour in the mornings before school and half day Saturday and Sunday. They were also farmers who farmed in Hob Lane, Burton Green. I remember Fred telling me that in the war he parachuted at Arnhem so he probably had a pretty rough time. Fred was, I believe, a member of the Westwood Club for many years. |

What a great pic, MR and it got me thinking what we had delivered as a kid.
Morning paper.
Evening paper.
Sunday papers (all from Holts paper shop in Canley Road).
Milk (Co-op).
Bread (Sutton's).
Pop.
Coal. I remember the delivery man with his leather apron, coal sack strap over his forehead and sack on his back.
We also had our house insurance delivered as Jack Sansom called monthly to collect and sign my mum's book (Co-op).

There was also Kingy the grocer. We had also had a van come round with tea, I think they were called Flower Peco Tips, and a pork butcher. |

On Beake Avenue we had a vegetable man come down with a flat cart once a week too. And don't forget the ice cream and pools people. |

Lindatee2002. When were you last in Beake Avenue? Not wishing to sound nosey, I lived at no.381 opposite the sportsground in 1958. It is a small world, isn't it?
I have a feeling it was a lot later than me. |

I remember Kingy coming down Middlemarch Road, but not the other two. Were they making specific deliveries, or did they have a "round"? |

There were two King brothers (Kingys) who were greengrocers/grocers. One of them lived in Middlemarch Road, a few doors from another greengrocer, Meeks.
Kings had Morris vehicles and Meeks had horse & cart.

Does anyone have any memory of a delivery van owner called Finney? It would have been around 1960s, because I served my apprenticeship with his son Richard.

Belushi, I don't know, I was only little, I think they only called at certain houses so I suppose they must have canvassed the street. Lolipop, the Kingy I remember was a horse and cart. I think he was from the Four Pounds Avenue area. |
