When my husband and I were married in 1966 we spent our honeymoon in London. Not having much spare cash one of our favourite places to eat was a Golden Egg restaurant. He insists there was one of these in Coventry, somewhere around the Burges area, but I can't remember one. Can anyone else?

The son of one of the chaps who set up the Golden Egg chain setup the popular Prezzo Chain, and I think another relative owns another chain. Shame we don't have one in Cov, they're pretty decent. I'm too young to remember Golden Egg, but there's interesting info on the web about their design approach.
Recent news has, of course, been about the 3 restaurants moving into Cathedral Lanes: Cosy Club, Wagamama and a South American themed chain, whose name escapes me. Hopefully we'll get some independents as well, and no more buffet restaurants. Cov is really behind in this respect!

Im pretty positive that Golden Egg is where Brook Street Bureau stands. At least that's what it WAS called for years, might be a differently named recruitment agency now |

Does anyone remember the Casino Snack Bar in Fleet Street?
It was a temporary building which stood almost opposite the City Arms from 1949-1957. It was next door to Sylvester the jewellers, also a temporary building.

Thanks Kaga
Only came across it by accident when searching planning records.
Sadly there are very few pictures of that area.
The snack bar business moved to another temporary building in Spon End in 1957.

Before the Beaker Cafe opened there was a cafe just round the corner on Radford Rd, it was owned by a Mr & Mrs Farren....
Yes I remember the cafe round the corner from the Beaker - huge mugs of Oxo being the highlight! Mr Farren in his white 'lab coat'. The Italia next to Savoy Cinema was the one I remember the most though. Coca cola for 1/6d! Coffee in see through cups served by Gino. Those were the days! |

Welcome to the forum roseparkes 1948, we hope you enjoy reminiscing with us.
I never dare go into the Beaker Cafe as it was full of rockers. but I did go to the Italia. I can remember it was the first time we had seen espresso machines and thought we were so modern. The Italia we always thought of the mods cafe. Did you live in Radford? |

The first coffee bar I remember having an espresso in was the Home and Fashion Store in Broadgate. It was on the corner by the Elephant over Alexanders and Hepworths the tailors and you went up to it via an outside escalator. This would be in the early 1950s. |

Hi all, just seen your mention of the "Cafe Continental". I own the Morris Minor van that was used there, registered as OHP 900 on the 2nd of November 1953 its one of the oldest vans still in existence. It was found by an enthusiast in a dutch barn in Cambridgeshire in 1991 and still had a 1965 tax disc in it. The following year it spent in Lincolnshire being restored (although it was more of a "tart-up" to be honest) and attended one rally before going off the radar for twenty years before turning up later on ebay in late 2012. I've done some work to it but I'm keen to find out more of its past, particularly its early life in Coventry. Any more info on this cafe would be greatly appreciated. |
