MR, it seems evident our grandfathers knew each other at ABC. Do I remember a tall man with fair wavy hair around the time the club opened? I have a photo of the preparation work prior to the greens at Gaveston Road. At the moment I've mislaid it but will upload as soon as it comes to light.
They did know each other, as I've just found out that they met in the quarter final of the County Pairs in 1944. My grandad and Albert Ballance (mentioned elsewhere on this forum) beat Bill Whitehead and Bert Kendall, as per this Telegraph report:
The "consolation" mentioned is for Williamson and Ballance, part of the reigning Fours champions, who had been heavily defeated in the quarter final of 1944, and my grandad had also lost in the Singles quarter final.
