I came across this advert in a 1880's magazine. I had not heard of the company before now but have found it was the forerunner of the Rudge company.
My grandfather worked at the Rudge through to the 1920's from about 1885 as a polisher, and lived in Rudge Road. This made me think that we don't seem to have much family, anecdotal information on the forum for that generation.
'Rudge it, don't Trudge it' was the slogan! I have found some trading history for you.

Midland Red-thanks for the adverts I went to one of those dinner dances at the Royal Court around about that time, with a group of people I worked with at Bedworth Hypermarket. We had such a laugh |

Hi NeilsYard
The Berkeley Grill was on the left hand side of Holyhead Road going into the city, just below St. Osburgs School about where the ring road roundabout is now.
Went to an end of football season bash there in the early 70s, needless to say I can't remember getting home.

I posted a few old adverts in my gallery a while back. Some will have to be re-uploaded as they suffered from the 'Moire' pattern due to resizing. They can be found here.... hopefully. Triumph - 'The Best Motorcycle in the World'.

Modern Machine Tools were more than just a local enginering company. Their football team was effectively a nursery team for Coventry City and apparently lost only one game in four years in the late 40s/early 50s. They supplied several players who went on to play for City's first team. The most notable of these was goalkeeper Reg Matthews, who was City's first player to be capped by England despite playing in Div.3 South at the time. |

I applied for an apprenticeship at the Gauge and Tool in early 1959. After getting past the various interviews I was offered one starting in mid summer. I can't remember why but there must have been of engineering downturn at the firm and very few apprentices, if any, were taken on in 1959. This caused quite a panic and was the reason I finished up with an apprenticeship at Courthouse Green. |

A collage of advertisements from 1920. Some of the names are still familiar after the war - Anslows, Tuck & Blakemore, London Laundry, Matterson Huxley & Watson - but maybe some of the others disappeared. Do they jog any memories?

Another set from 1920. Now we remember Hansons, Blakemores, Ashleys, Lee Beesley, and of course Barclays Bank. But what about the others?
