Shops of yore

What a coincidence my wife and myself are renovating a Welsh dresser and we've been looking for some appropriate brass hardware but nothing we've seen in the likes of B&Q etc hasn't really come up to expectations I said to her it's a shame Phillips aren't still in business we'd have found exactly what we wanted there.

Hi people, have only just caught up with this topic, and will never be able to read it all, but near the start K talked about Caplans in the precinct, on the curve about two doors away from Woolies, well I was the first customer to order a suit from him when he opened, I only went in for a tailor made jacket, but he said if I ordered the suit he would only charge me half-price as his first customer, the best suit I ever had, never found another jacket to fit so well, and last so long. must have been about 54/55 time. There was also a barber opened up, at the bottom of Hertford st/ Warwick row, almost opposite the YMCA, about the same time, the first real trendy stylist, I used for a number of years, not sure now if it was Jackson? Trouble with this forum, no me, is I moved about the city centre, all day every day, and now can.t remember the names and places of the shops I used frequently in those old days, yet when you see a picture, ah now, I was always served by that old woman with the squinty eyes instead of the young blonde, comes back to me. There was a sweet shop in Gosford street, on the left about two doors away from Ford street, early fifties I believe, Told me he had a knew kind of sweets, chocolate liqueurs, so I bought some, often wondered is that when they came in?

5 points if anyone can remember the name of the supermarket that first traded on the current site of Iceland, Queen Victoria Road. No looking at old records, telephone directories, Google or any other search device. Straight from the memory.

The demise of the Co-op got me to thinking what would be the shop in the city centre that has been on the same site for the longest time? My guess is Agers next to the Co-op followed by Marks and Spencer and British Home Stores.

Agers seems like a very good shout - unless anyone knows better!

Hi all Agers was No 6 Smithford St, at the start of hostilities, but they were bombed out, very early on in the war. They then moved to their current premises. I will find out full details next week.

According to their history page, they moved to Corporation Street within weeks of 14 Nov 1940
