On 24th Aug 2014 3:31pm, Prof said: I don't recall Marcia Gowns but I do remember a lady's hat shop in Ironmonger Row - Alice Middleton. I don't know whether my mother and grandmothers went there for their hats but I fancy I liked the name so have never forgotten it and if I am right it was almost in the middle of Ironmonger Row and opposite the end of Owen Owen.
Mornin' Prof, You have just mentioned one of my favourite shops - Alice Middleton (apart from the shoe shops) Most pay days I would pop into A.M's and being a fashion and lingerie shop I cannot remember ever seeing any hats on display. You are right of course it was in the middle of the row of shops, I could have taken you there blind folded from Owen Owen. I am trying to remember now where you may have seen some hats. This would have been in the late 50's early 60's. Hope you are having a great day so far. Wave

The Church Bookshop in Hertford Street had a spiral staircase and the lady shop manager wore a floral housecoat (overall) when working there. Time spent in there was always interesting and the Geisha for coffee just nearby.

I may be wrong, but my memory tells me that this photo (courtesy Dean Nelson) shows Alice Middleton's shop

I tried to describe this picture over the phone to my mum - she remembers Alice Middleton's being on Ironmonger Row but not the exact location. She wasn't sure AM sold hats, however. To the best of her recollection, AM sold fine quality blouses and lingerie.

Regarding Alice Middleton's MR. I thought it was situated in the same block as the old Sutton & Jones TV shop, which used to stand on a corner with the big Liner sign above it. I will give you the benefit of the doubt, I was always too busy looking at the undies I could not afford. Blush Wave P.S. Having said that, I have only just seen Dutchman's great photo, lo and behold, there it was, just where you said. Thank you. I'm sure these shops have been mentioned before.

I've crossposted this from Inner Ring Road to avoid dragging that thread off-topic:

Speaking of which, does anyone remember the temporary shops in Trinity Street before Sainsbury's was built?
On 13th Sep 2014 11:22pm, Roger Turner said: There was an original Tesco in the arcade by the market cannot remember the name, but I do remember the lumps of meat, congealed blood in loose plastic wrappings.
That was "Farm Foods" which became Victor Value before being taken-over by Tesco Smile

I can remember when the Catholic Repository was in Hill Street, near the Gibney, Appropriately near to St Osburg's Church which is at the top of Hill Street, RC's could find their requisites there and as it was also opposite St John's East window, the Anglo-Catholics (High Church worshippers) could equally avail themselves, of religious statues, rosaries, tracts and so forth.

It's very sad to learn that Beryl Houghton, Coventry's family run camera shop in The Bull Yard, is to close it's doors today after 60 years of trading in the city. I guess it's a reflection on modern trading habits and the ever-increasing use of mobile phones as cameras. Sad Read the article in the Telegraph here
