Thank you Dutchman, especially for the photo. I didn't remember that one at all perhaps because the number 9 bus went up Primrose Hill St.

Harrison's opticians in High St. My elder brother was manager of the photography section. I started a Saturday job as a teenager in the temporary John Manners shop just next door but one, then later had full-time employment with them in the Precinct until I was 18 and moved to Bristol.

There's a more recent photo of the shop here showing the forecourt in front of then newly-built college where the Dalek was filmed.

That's a super photo Dutchman. Shame there is not one as good of the Well Street shop when thriving.

Hi, I worked as a Saturday lad at Ron Shepherd Cycles in the late 1960's and was always nipping into the hardware shop. They were great guys and there was nothing you could not find in that shop. The service was brilliant and the shop was an aladdins cave. Happy days!

I remember the smell of paraffin etc too, which reminds me that there was another shop like this at the bottom of Ball Hill, ie the Forum shops, which was called Philips (?) That one sold all similar things too, lots of drawers full of stuff. I used to go there with my mum to buy the paraffin used in the heaters for the upstairs of our house (no central heating then!)

I suspect "Saxelbys" of Much park Street later became "Saxes Baby Carriages" of Spon Street.

I am sure there was horsemeat on sale at Bauser's Fleet St during WW2.

I don't recall Marcia Gowns but I do remember a lady's hat shop in Ironmonger Row - Alice Middleton. I don't know whether my mother and grandmothers went there for their hats but I fancy I liked the name so have never forgotten it and if I am right it was almost in the middle of Ironmonger Row and opposite the end of Owen Owen.

I think she lived at the big detached house at the corner of Asthill Grove and Humphrey Burton Road - the shop was on Ironmonger Row, between the southern end of Palmer Lane and Trinity Street Thumbs up

Thanks for the clarification Dutchman and Midland Red for the extra information of the Stivichall residence of Alice - a salubrious part of Coventry near Leamington Road for those who could afford to live there.
