From memory, the Rex Market was roughly where Smithford Way is now, I can remember playing in the burnt out shell of Hogarths, it was more or less roughly opposite the Gas Showrooms

Unable to recall the name but I often visited a shop in Well St that sold everything for the outdoors. Tents, hiking boots, portable cookers, everything was there. Later the top floor of the Gas Showrooms was used for selling similar goods. My wife lost her wedding ring on the beach at Gt Yarmouth so on return to Coventry we visited Ratners to buy a replacement. Shortly after Ratner himself said that a lot of stuff they sold was rubbish. Later that ring was stolen by a burglar who visited us. Les |

Yup! That's the shop and what a sorry sight it is. In my younger days I did a lot of camping and walking, possibly spent as much time on Dartmoor as the inmates did. A friend of mine Chris Dunn worked at Lynes and obtained for me a few staff discounts, very handy for a hard up student. If Chris is reading this it would be nice to get in touch again. Les |

Yes Lynes has sadly now gone. That whole area around Corporation Street is dead. Even the 'new' Equity and Law building is now mostly empty.
Both old and new now redundant.

Charles Ager holds a special place with me as they are my ancestors
There was a small coffee shop in town that my Dad and I would visit most Saturday mornings. I wish I could remember the name of it or could see a picture. From memory, it was down a little alleyway near to where BeWise used to be and Woolies. The shop was on two levels, the ground floor was full of sacks of coffee beans and upstairs was the cafe part where my dad would have a coffee and I would have a chocolate milkshake. Ahhh memories |

Hi Rob, & Hi all,
City Pram also had a shop in Foleshill near to the General Wolf. My Pam had her 'Raleigh 531' from there about 1978. That was our local cycle shop.
Hi Philip.
The shop on Foleshill Road was Swifts Cycles, City Pram only ever had one shop in CoventryTCS

Hi all,
Hogarths was a departmental store retailer. I remember their store near to the forum in Stoke & also their new store which is now the cycle store on Foleshill Rd. A feature of their stores was the cash in flywheel system that travelled from overhead wires into a central cash office. That was fun to watch.
Just found these references to Hogarths on another thread :

Yes, I remember Provi and Mutual cheques, mum used to have them. There were only certain shops you could use them in. Probably that's why most of my clothes came from Hogarths in Corporation Street.

Hello Tricia. Lovely to see you. Hogarths bought my mum's shop businesses in Coventry when she retired. After she retired to Cornwall, I lost all contact with Hogarths so I did not know what had happened to them. Hogarths were at the Forum & at Bishops Gate end of Foleshill Rd. My mum did have some kind of business tie with Hogarths sharing in buying, not too sure of that though.

Hi Philip, I remember Hogarths at the forum but can't recall a branch on Foleshill Road (note I didn't say THE Foleshill Road, although I nearly did) You have such a good memory of shops, clearly due to the fact that your mother was in the retail business.

The Hogarths building is what is now Hawks Cycles, Tricia. My mum lived, slept & everything else her shops, which rubbed off on me. She had a mind set that was akin to Aunty Wainwright off 'Last of the Summer Wine'. She was dedicated to her customers. If someone came into any of her shops for something, she saw it as her job to get it for them. I remember the xray shoe size machines that Hogarths had & at the forum they also had the over-head fly wheel pulley cash containers that whizzed across the ceiling to the cash office .

Hogarth's had a shoe shop in town as well, didn't they? I can remember going in there as a kid - and the reason mainly that I remember it was the X-ray machine! (They wouldn't allow those today, with Elf and Safety, would they? ) I can't remember where it was though.
Some other big stores had either the vacuum or pulley type cash carrying system. I can't remember which ones, but I do remember being fascinated by them; I think Trustee Savings Bank had one. Interestingly, our local main Nationwide branch has a vacuum system between the cashiers and the 'back office', which is actually underneath in the cellar. What goes around comes around!

Just found a photo of Weston Street and my husband remembers the man who ran the corner shop with his wife, the man's name was Arthur Cooper and he used to work at Unbrako in the stores at Northey Road, he used to sell his sweets and cigarettes at the factory and he was always sucking 'Nuttall's Minto's'! I can just about decipher 'A. Cooper' on the sign.
Just wondered whether anyone remembers the shop.

I am trying to remember the location (and the name) of a shop that I used to frequent in the late 1950's /early 60's that sold electronic components for us enthusiasts who used to dabble in home-made short-wave radios and other electronics. I think is was in Gosford street and sold not only new products, but ex-service radio gear and components. Can anyone remember it?
I recall there being two such radio component shops. There was Electronic Services down Gosford Street; when it was demolished to make way for the ring road, it moved to City Arcade. It was run by two brothers named Barton, one of whom had a son at KHVIII.
The other shop was in Much Park Street. It was called REP (Radio Experimental Products). I guess it just went out of business. |

I remember it as moving to the temporary shops in the High Street circa 1969 when Much Park Street was being demolished. Bought a TV aerial from there. Was eventually taken over by Tandy which became Maplins.

Hi all,
I am sure that it was REP who moved to the bottom of the Arcade, but closed about six years ago. I bought lots of stuff from there, including the piggy-back jack plugs that you can see on some of my railway photos. |
