You have done it again Dutchman, Thanks for correcting me. We did have our fair number of markets over the years.
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Shamble's Arcade was a brilliant 'cut through' from Hales Street. It was always a really busy little shopping area. My daughter loved the cheap jewellery stall and always insisted we went there when in town. I think that must have been in the mid eighties. Does anyone remember when it closed down. Was it when West Orchards was developed? |

Rex Market. I was bought a puppy from there in 1948, wonderful little dog. The market often had an Escapologist getting out of a chained canvas bag. Fascinating to a five year old. |

Does anyone remember the little pet shop on the cobbled street at the rear of Sainsbury's in town in the 50s. It had a little monkey in the window which you used to watch visitors through the window. Fishy Moores was a few doors down too |

Hello Pat, and another 'welcome' to our forum
You know, I was only thinking about this shop a couple of days ago, and I couldn't for the life of me recall where it was. Simply asking "Does anyone remember the pet shop" wouldn't really have helped, but now I remember, thank you!
I only have a vague memory of the monkey, but they always seemed to have a tiny puppy in the window whenever I stood and gazed in. Thankfully, I don't think that would happen now? |

Hi Pat & Tony, Hi all
I am sure that it was just called 'The Pet Shop'. I passed it most days on my way to school, walking up Trinity St. |

Thanks for that Philip. It's really strange that I've been racking my brains just trying to place whereabouts in the city centre this very shop would have been, then Pat posts about it! |

Are you sure Philip? Isn't Silver Street behind Millenium Place? Aren't we talking about New Buildings? |

Hi Tony,
I did not mean Silver St, I meant the street that was at the back of the Alhambra, New Buildings I think that it was called. I think that it is where a silver cross was found. Its my age!!!! |

Hi Philip, yes I think it was Silver Street, The Alhambra, and I think the rear entrance to the Silver Sword pub was there too. Thanks for replying. The pet shop was a favourite place

Hi Tony, glad I jogged your memory. I used to get taken there to see the little monkey in the window. I cannot remember it closing down though. Thanks for your help. |

"Silver Street" runs eastwards from Bishop Street.
