Hi Neil, have you got anything on Permature Ltd and E P Welding Co (the signs on the wall)?
Cheers

Post 1918 but pre-war, that location was first Hotchkiss and then Morris Motors Ltd engine branch. After the war I find E P Welding Co there in 1955 but the other business is Avondale-Waring Ltd, precision engineers and tool makers. The businesses were in the extensive yard at the back, though post-war there was probably a different set of buildings.

Around that time (mid-1950s), I seem to remember that Modern Machine Tools were in that area, R White Engineering Co too. |

Another shot thanks to Gray Forster on FB. Several pictures around of The Mermaid but not to include this view of the building next door.

We do. I've got photos of the demolition and it refers to it as the post office, which would explain why the Blue Pig inherited the job.

Hi there - I am doing some family research and my husband's grandmother's family lived at "17 court 6 house" Gosford Street - this is exactly how it is on several documents.
My question is does anyone know how to decipher the description - is this number 17 court and the 6th house or court number 6?
I've looked on the maps that I've found on this thread which have been really useful but if anyone has any further info that would be great.

Hi Fooman and welcome to the forum. I would say it would have indeed been Court No.17 and house 6 within that court. Court 17 was just to the west of the Old Chase Pub at Number 43 North side. |

Hi Fooman. I agree with Neil, especially as court 6 hasn't got 17 buildings. Here's a map. I'll see if I've got an image, though don't hold your breath.

Great, thank you. My son is doing a history project about family growing up in the 1930s and 40s and he is so pleased that he was able to speak with his great grandmother about growing up in that era (she was born in 1929) and can remember being in Coventry during the war. We've managed to find the address from her older brothers war records and she can recall playing in the courtyard behind the houses and I was just hoping to find some photos etc to enhance his school project and also to be able to print off to show his great grandmother too.

So I've had a good look and so far I've not seen a decent image, even of the building at the front. Court 17 is narrow and must have been hard to photograph. There is a fairly grainy aerial shot of the other side in this book. looking from the east but it isn't going to blow you away. The quality isn't as good as the BFA shots - of which there are a few of the area but they're all from the north or west. From the south it can't be seen as it's hidden by the factory.
There are only some very distant photos of the building at the front of the court and 1.5 rough watercolours directly of the front. There are a lot of images of the surrounding area but none that I'm aware of for the specific court. |

So was the main street where shops and pubs etc were and then there were alleys going down to the different courts?
I've looked at the aerial photos website and this looks great in terms of a larger over view- I can see on some there are pins that people have placed but how do you see what the pins are - I'm hoping one of the pins will help me pin point court 17 that I'm trying to locate Sue

Fooman from the BFA image Helen posted I think this might be your Court (though happy to be corrected as its a while between that map and the image!)

I think that it's the one to the left of the one marked. I made the same mistake. |
