In the Henry VIII thread there is some discussion about the 'Kenderdines'.

Coventry Standard - Saturday 7 September 1940
LIGHTING OFFENCES.
For having displayed lights during the black-out the following Coventry defendants were fined . . .
. . . The headmaster of King Henry VIII School, Coventry, Alfred Albert Charles Burton, was summoned on Wednesday for having displayed a light at the school on August 16. P.c.Southam said it was an exceptionally bright light. The cleaners were in, and the defendant said that it was overlooked and "it was not put for fun." Mr. F.C. Kenderdine, for the defendant, said the headmaster failed to notice the light had been left on. Fine of £3 was imposed.
. . . Our family doctors were Tom and Richard Kenderdine - from Earlsdon, I wonder if they were related to Mr. F.C. Kenderdine.

As soon as I read the name I thought the same Roger, the Kenderdines being our doctors as well.

Almost certainly all related, there are/were a number of Kenderdines in various professional positions in the city
I recall that they were very involved with Holy Trinity Church too

As well as Doctor Tom and Doctor Richard there was also Doctor Eric, all GP's at their surgery in Queens Road. There was also Charles Kenderdine who was the Coventry Coroner. I think they were all brothers and Old Boys of King Henry VIII.

My memory is hazy, because my doctor was a Dr Lewis, who operated from a surgery near the Swanswell, it was my wife through her father that brought them in to my side of the family. I believe her father used to play golf with Doctor Richard.
Now you mention Queen`s Road was the surgery, that rings true.
I know I said Earlsdon because I remember having pointed out to me; a house with a long front garden - (is it Earlsdon Ave?) opposite the Methodist Church (that was one I always tried my best to avoid, as my aunt was a member of the Ladies Guild, or something there, who used to put on entertainments - they threatened to put me on stage, particularly amongst GIRLS - I was subsequently cured of one, but not the other)
Anyway, could that have been the home residence of one of the doctors?

Mrs G. M. Kenderdine., 68 Earlsdon Ave South, Coventry 1935-6 Directory. The only Kenderdine in the book.
Also Eric Cecil Keevil Kenderdine, 49 Earlsdon Ave South, again the only Kenderdine in the book for 1926.
Well, having researched a little about them with the Earlsdon Avenue clue, I also found a 1911 census reference to an Ernest Henry Kenderdine. He was living at 19 Queens Road.
He was born in Stafford and the year 1877. But due to an error in transcription his profession is given as 'medical prisoner'. I bet he would have liked that.
It's obvious on the original document that he's a 'practitioner', so much for scanning by robots.

From the newspaper archive, Dr Ernest Kenderdine of 19 Queen's Road died in 1942. At his funeral were his sons, listed as J H, F C, R E, and A R Kenderdine and nephew Dr E C Kenderdine. The son F C appears to be defending court cases. |

People have heard of William Middlemore's saddle company in Little Park Street, his brother Richard was Britain's top eye surgeon of the time.

Where was Doctor "Tom", none of the initials seem to contain a "T", but I thought he was a brother of Richard?
Did Coventry keep a register of Doctors and Addresses?
Incidentally thanks all for the research so far. There seemed quite a host of Kenderdines involved in city affairs, are there any modern ones? |

Obituary:
DEATH OF DR. ERNEST KENDERDINE
A WELL-KNOWN member of the medical profession in Coventry, Dr. Ernest Henry Kenderdine, 19, Queen's Road, died yesterday, at the age of 65.
Dr. Kenderdine, who had been indisposed for a few weeks, was a brother-in-law of Dr. John Bradley, who died a month ago.
A native of Stafford, Dr. Kenderdine came to Coventry about 37 years ago, after qualifying at Birmingham University, in 1903. For the time he had been house surgeon and physician at Birmingham General Hospital.
Dr. Kenderdine had practised at the Queen's Road address ever since coming to Coventry. During the last war he was tubercolosis officer in Coventry, and in the present war he served on local medical boards examining recruits for the Forces.
Dr. Kenderdine was a keen sportsman. In his early days he was a particularly enthusiastic hockey player and was chosen for his University's team. He leaves a widow and five sons.
His nephew, Dr. E. C. K. Kenderdine, went into partnership with him some years ago, and they were later joined by Dr. Kenderdine's eldest son, Dr. T. B. Kenderdine. |

If you look at the 'Earlsdon' thread March 2015 you will see photographs of the house in Earlsdon Avenue South, which was owned by Dr Eric and his wife. The surgery was in the garden in a small building like a stable. Eric was the oldest of the three Kenderdine Drs at that time. He brought me into the world on his own Birthday apparently. He was also a Magistrate I believe. |

Does anyone have memories of Dr Rollason, also Queen's Road on the corner of Greyfriars Green by the Starley Memorial?
He was my grandparents GP but I believe he was also an obstetrician and worked at Keresley Hospital. His receptionist was a Scottish lady Miss McDonald, with black hair swept up to a bun and the inevitable for the time, stiffly starched white coat. I am speaking now of the 1940s-50s. The red brick building with double doors, I think may still be there.

Previous post: "Mrs G. M. Kenderdine, 68 Earlsdon Ave South, Coventry. 1935-6 Directory. The only Kenderdine in the book"
Mrs Kenderdine ran an independent school from this address, I went to it between the ages of 3 to 7, which would be 1956 to 1960ish - Mrs Kenderdine School.
She was also into the Round Table and we were sent to camp at Camberley Tekels Park Camp.
She had a few sons who I believe were doctors, including one who was a coroner. Is she the wife of the above Kenderdine??
Edit: A quick internet search on Kenderines and Round Table tossed up a Miss Florence Kenderdine, so perhaps she was a sister and hence maybe the sons were her nephews. Chief Knight of Round Table in 1952. |
