Hi Julie, welcome aboard Not only was your father amazing with his knowledge of records and just where to locate them amongst the 1000s on the shop shelves, he was such a very nice man, and I still have very fond memories of him, and working alongside him as a Christmas temp Thumbs up

Hi Julier , Yes welcome to the forum. I'm sure it was Malcolm that went to Woodlands the same time as me in the Sixties would that be right ?

I can only echo the same sentiments as others. My late mother, Elsie Shiers, worked at Fennells for decades and it was always a pleasure to have a chat with him if I popped in to see my mum. Hope you are well.

Do any of you forumites remember Coventry record Library? Bit off topic perhaps.. My first two choices when I joined were Beethoven's 9th Symphony and the Mikado ( Strange mix I know ) These records were the old 78 RPM and came in large cardboard carriers with string handles. So with the Mikado over one side of my motorcycle handle bars and the 9th Symphony over the other side I set off for home and had the only motorcycle accident I ever had and regrettably The Mikado was in fragments and had to pay up for the libraries loss...
Just old and knackered

There's a nice little record shop up at Fargo Village, called 'Romans'. Nice prices, and the stuff is in very good condition. I've picked up some good seventies albums from there: Steve Howe and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Hi Ruth, I've still got some, (have'nt been played for 45 years +) not forgetting 'Music For Pleasure' LP's price 14/6 that Woolies sold or the other similar 6 track chart EP's that Tesco sold in their store on Queen Victoria Road (took over from Victor Value) both of which I've still got in my possession ! I forget whether the latter were the 'embassy' brand or not. I'll check when next in the loft ! Happy

My first record came from Woollies in 1962. I had a record player for christmas but had to pay half towards it out of my paper round and Saturday and Sunday in the Candy Box, Jubilee Crescent. Money was tight for mum and dad so I only had 2 records, my old mans a dustman by Lonnie Donegan and Hit the road Jack. I saved up then to buy a record I wanted, Happy Birthday sweet sixteen.

Remember Kitty drinking in the Golden Cross, but I've not seen her for 40 years. There was a record shop in Jubilee Crescent - Smith Bros. Just up from the Candy Box. I was manager there briefly about 1973. "The World of " series were original artists and priced at 99P on the Decca label. I still have The World of Donovan, and The World of Rambling Sid Rumpo.
