Can anyone help? I seem to remember back in the 1960s that there was a hairdressers in Jubilee Crescent which also had a counter and stools where you could buy coffee. It would have been between the Godiva Fish Bar and Sharman's newsagents. Is this a false memory?
Remember a cafe about 3-4 doors down from the newsagents on the corner of Owenford but do not recall it being a hairdressers or barbers,as we as kids went to the barbers at the bottom of Foleshill bridge. Memory not so good as that was pre-56
Thanks for that. Yes, that would be the location. In the early-mid 1960s it was a hairdressers as well as a cafe, if I remember correctly. |

Having grown up in the 1970s & 1980s, in this neighbourhood, I can confirm that there was a ladies' hairdressers in between the Godiva Fish Bar and the newsagents, as described. I believe it was four/five shops away from the newsagent? However, I do remember that sometime in the 1980s, the shop was called 'Hair by Jenny Lovegrove', and that all the stylists wore burgundy-coloured jump suits - the fashion of the day!!
OddSock: Particularly interested in the family surnames Cowley, Shale, & Pratt in Coventry!

The first coffee bar that I recall, also with a jukebox, about 1958/59 time.
Just down from the Gaumont, on the other side of the road.
Any knowledge or memories?

"El Cabana" and "Gigi", both in Gosford Street.
There were others as well, the "Alex" at the very bottom of Gosford Street just before it became Far Gosford Street and another next to the Fox & Vivian pub I dont remember the name of.
In the late 1960s the "Sorrento" opened almost next door to El Cabana.

Gigi (far left) and "Steak House":

My claim to fame. I painted the inside of Alex cafe for the princely sum of £4.50 in 1964. Mind you he did ply me with plum brandy one night, we got through the best part of a bottle. It was one hell of a walk home, all six hundred yards of it.
Just to add, I was 16 at the time. |

Hi all,
I enjoyed a lovely time in the Belgrade cafe today. The food & drink was excellent, a treat in fact, as five of us munched away, whilst sharing a couple of hours of catching up.

A completely refurbished Belgrade, new menu, new prices. Well, someone has to pay for it. |

Hi all, it's me,
As unaccustomed as it is for me to yatter about food, after a morning's chapel cleaning, I ventured along to the Playwright Cafe at the Coventry canal basin. I may have mentioned this venue before, but the quality of my thick cooked ham, fried eggs & chunky chips dinner was ace. Washed down with a strawberry milk shake made with cream, it was like being on holiday.
Good old Coventry.
Of course, I arrived on bus.

Ken Day shared this one recently on FB - been discussed on this thread, so adding here as it's the first time I've seen the exterior of The Captain's Table.

Hi all,
My lunch, sorry "luncheon", today was a fabulous fish & chip dinner in the Arena Tesco cafe.
I did a social services errand to Kidderminster on Tuesday, where I paid over £10 for cod, chips & mushy peas, which was very good.
Today for £6.50, this compared very favourably.
The Tesco Cod, & it was cod, put the Tesco cafe into what I would term restaurant quality. No joke.

The Festival Cafe was opened in May 1962 opposite the Cathedral ruins as a temporary structure to provide snacks for visitors during the Cathedral Festival. It was still there in 1986 as John Laing were applying for permission to demolish it. TEMPORARY? And it was still there 1987 when the tourist information opened next door! |
