Hello I am interested to learn what you can remember about Albert Norman's market stall. I have a particular interest in one person who worked for him as his buyer of fruit and vegetables in the 1950s; John (Jack) Arch my grandad. I have learnt a little of his past but I have many gaps in my family tree that needs filling in. After losing most of his family he disappeared for many years then turned up working for Albert. Like you I can remember the paintings, Can you remember where the local traders drank their beer. Looking forward in hearing from you

well, it just goes to show that if you look you can find the answer. On the back of the largest drawing it says A. E. Norman - Bayley Lane. Blush

I can confirm that your paintings will have been done by Albert Norman. He was married to my aunt Lilly. What a character he was, a real Bohemian. I have several of his works. He was a very talented and diverse artist. I wish I had seen more of him while I was growing up, but I lived in Derby so only saw him when he came to visit. He gave me an oil painting for my wedding present in 1968 which had been on display in the Herbert Art Gallery. It was called Theme 67, all about Hippies and Flower Power. Since I retired I decided to try to find out more about his time spent at the market. The articles on this site are very interesting.

On 3rd Mar 2014 2:41pm, Peter Judd said: My grandfather had a fruit and green grocers shop under the old market hall clock, the story goes that it was demolished during the blitz, his main concern was that he had just taken Christmas stock in of Lincan products, and the Germans blew it all up, I understand that the clock mechanism was accessed from within the shop.I would welcome any pics of the shop if anyone has any. After the war my father took a stall in the Barracks market at a rent of 10 shillings a week including a huge warehouse that used to be used for stabling the horses when the site was used as a barracks, the warehouses backed on to what used to be the Empire cinema but at a much lower level. Another stall holder called Albert Norman (a local artist) also had a warehouse where he would spend many hours producing some very off the wall art. He was a member of the Umbrella club in little park street and was assumed to be from the travelling fraternity. I spent all of my school holidays and after school hours at the market and the town centre was my playground in the fifties, I remember the Cooper brothers having a crock stall and when the deliveries of crockery would arrive from British rail they used to drop me inside the huge wooden barrels to hand out the crocks that were very carefully packed in straw. There is a photo of me somewhere sat on top of boxes of daffodils selling them for 3d a bunch, another pic shows mum behind the stall with potatoes in front that we're also 3d a pound, the old fella would turn in his grave if he saw the prices now. There was uproar when the new circular market opened and the Barracks stall holders were invited to move the rents for the new pitches was £3.00 per week with an additional ten shillings for the underground warehouses. I have many memories of market life if anyone would like me to relate, but being new to the site I don't want to be boring,
Hello I can recall Albert Norman and his paintings, they were often on show when I visited the stall in the 50s. Like you I was often down at the stall during my holidays visiting my grandad. Can you recall a John (Jack) Arch who bought the fruit and vegetables for "Normans" and on occasions he worked on the stall. He was an ex-soldier, he always wore a cap and had highly polished boots. Looking forward in reading your reply. Tony

Hi all, Wave I am sure that his daughters were still running the stall up to just a few years ago. His paintings were still on the headboard of the stall. Thumbs up For identity, their stall was the back of Pete Mac Vegetables. For years on Friday mornings, the two longest queues were to these two stalls. Always good quality stuff. I know that Pete's stall is now run by Billy, his long time assistant. My priority in life is always to know who I am dealing with & not what. That way we avoid fakes. Billy knows his onions. Cheers Wave Thumbs up
