Boot and Shoe Repair Shops

I remember the Cobblers on the Bell Green Road just over the navigation bridge, he was only about 4ft 10 and his name was George Buggins.

Thanks bernie1 for adding another local Cobbler The shop sounded close to the "Navigation Inn" and I wonder if Dreamtime used to take her "High Heels" to be repaired by Mr. Buggins!

I hope Dutchman can help here, there was a shop next to All Saints Church in Far Gosford Street opposite Bramble Street which I recall being a cobblers in the 60s

You're right with the one on Barker Butts Lane - Three Spires Avenue corner, Morgana.

The shop I remember, well more of a house really, was definitely next to All Saints Church and always had leather bags and goods outside for sale. They repaired bags too but I have a very distant memory of going there with my dad to collect a pair of repaired shoes, it was over 50 years ago so like I said a very distant memory, the old grey matter needs a bit of a jolt these days

My mum would have, Foxcote, but I didn't although I do remember the shops beyond the bridge. Before I was married my 'high heels' went in for an overhaul at the one on Jubilee Crescent and I am blowed if I can remember their trade name.

Sounds a lot like the tiny shop that used to be near the top of Gosford Street? They repaired shoes but I wouldn't call them a "cobbler's" as such. Their main business was leather goods - handbags and belts - and the smell of leather in the shop was totally overpowering. They were forced to move circa 1965 when the extension to the College of Art was built.

Hi,Tricia, I used to live across the road from that shoe repair shop, at 64 King Edward Road. You're absolutely right about smell of leather, I loved that smell! I street viewed the road not long ago and saw that the shop is now a private residence.

I remember little George Buggins' shop on Bell Green Road, it was a wooden contraption next to Maslin's paint and decorating supplies shop. We would always bang on the window as we passed and he would shout at us to ****** off! I always thought he was a miserable so and so but when you weren't trying to make his life a misery he was a nice chap. I learned later that he was the bookie's runner and did nicely from the Morris workers.
