That's exactly how I remember it Tilly but girls who were there earlier remember it as being different. Blazers were also optional in summer weren't they, don't remember many girls wearing one in warm weather? (we used to have warm weather back then!) Lol

It would seem so dutchman. I wore a knitted maroon cardi in the summer months and yes we did get hot summers then.

Hi The first photo is of Ullathorne grammar school girls, in I think about the late 50's. I was in the year above them. I recognise many of the faces, but only a couple of names. Back row, second in from the right Nina De Marco, and third in from the right back row, Bridget Taylor. On the front row is Jeanette McKercher third in from the right. I think that's right. On the second photo, where they are pretending to smoke, back row on the right, I think her name was Philomena. The uniform was Royal Blue blazers, and blue and white striped cotton dresses. Smile
Regards Veronica

My mum was at Ullathorne - will have to show her this but I think she would have left around '56. Jennifer McMullan, if anyone recalls?

You are correct about Nina, and she's second from left, back row, in the second photo Thumbs up She emigrated to Australia, but sadly died a few years ago - much too young Sad

Hello. I can't help with the above photograph, but this thread has brought back many memories for me. I was at Ullathorne Secondary Modern Girls from 1956 to 1959 and Miss Healy was my teacher (also deputy head). I remember her heavy make-up and perfume, but I don't remember her as being strict. She was firm, but fair. I had a great deal of respect for her. The school was still pretty new then (it had only opened a few years before) and the uniform was maroon blazers and cardigans or jumpers, with grey skirts. In summer the dresses were definitely gingham - different colours to denote which house one was in. The houses were Newman (blue) Vaughan (green) Manning (red) and Wiseman (yellow). Our ties were a mix of stripes (grey with whatever colour your house was). Maroon bloomers were worn for PE (very becoming!). Miss Stephenson was the head. We had a brilliant history teacher whose name escapes me, which is unfortunate because she engendered in me a love of history which has stayed with me throughout my life, and a lady who taught pottery and did drama classes, Miss Conlon, who smoked like a chimney and was friendly with a Miss Jefferies and they constantly spoke in French to each other so as to keep their conversations private from us. I remember Mary Fennell, Kathleen Walsh, Sheila Hurst, Emily Perch, Mary Adams, Marie Southall and Ruth Cramer who were all in my class. Alas, memory won't release any more names at the moment.

Hi SuMax. I was at Ullathorne S.M. from 1954-58, I believe the history teacher was called Mrs Hubbard. I agree with your comment about her being a brilliant teacher.

Hi SuMax and phyllisk, Wave I was at Ullathorne at the same time as you. It was good to be reminded of the teachers. I made a wicker tray in Mrs Wright's class, she also taught arts and crafts like Miss Conlon. I remember Miss Jeffreys but cannot remember being taught by her. I recall Miss Gosling teaching elecution, music and drama. I cannot remember why, but a group of us were invited to her house in Kenilworth for tea! I started Ullathorne in the second year (Form 2.1B), Mrs Smith was the form teacher, she also taught maths. Miss Whelan was the form teacher in the third year, then we had Mrs Smith again in the fourth.
