Warwick Road Goods Yard & Grosvenor Road Footbridge

I would say that building on the left is the rear of the warehouse that stood on Warwick Road just up from that small roundabout by 'Central 6' shopping complex. It would have been roughly opposite The Rocket pub by the railway station bridge. I seem to remember the buildings became a recording studio and think it was called 'Horizon House' where local bands like The Specials and The Selecter recorded.

Thanks Catshed, I think I know where you mean now, there was a yard entrance next to the School if I remember correctly.

After looking again I could be very wrong so before someone calls me an idiot, I think Horizon House was much taller (3 storeys) than that building in the photo, maybe it's the left hand of old station where the parcels were sorted, but then that doesn't fit the photo's description of Coventry Goods Yard, Grosvenor Road, Coventry. 29th November 1960?

I've seen the picture before but it looks nothing like Grosvenor Road to me or even a view from Grosvenor Road? Looks more like a view from Warwick Road: Old-Maps.co.uk

I recently visited Grosvenor Road footbridge as I had discovered that there was still some indication of the presence of stables which were built into the approach to the bridge - there was a lot of bushes in the way but one large rusty hinge could still be seen in one of the bricked-up arches, which remained from what was a stable door The brick-built sloping section at the city end (north) in Grosvenor Road now joins up with the modern span installed when Central 6 was developed on the site of the Warwick Road Goods Yard The modern section then meets the two remaining sections of the old iron bridge, known as "Anarchy Bridge", which dates from the 1850s - it was built to link Earlsdon and Spencer Park to the city centre and to maintain a public right of way through the new railway marshalling and goods yard, following an ancient route which used to run due south and on to Kenilworth

There are a fair few pics here on Warwickshire Railways of this Goods Yard. It is named No.1 Goods Shed and goods were stored on the upper floor and passed down chutes to be loaded onto carriers.

The 'Britain From Above' site has a good clear view of 'Coventry Station and Area, 1920'.

Just to update all with some new images I've come across - all rights to the owners. The Goods Yard before Central 6! (taken from the footbridge) And this was Horizon Recording Studios as mentioned.

Red - they are fantastic! I've been looking for a photo of those buildings from Warwick Road for ages Does anyone know the history behind them? Were they originally connected to the Goods Yard/Railways in use? I can recall my Dad used to park on the Goods Yard land in the 70's when we went into town. It was always either there (then we could visit Grandma in Earlsdon) or on the 'car park' scrub where the Skydome now is. I can remember the Goods Yard land was very pot-holed and uneven and it was a challenge to avoid the huge puddles in Winter. I cannot say I really took an interest in those buildings at the time but the first photo does bring it all back (along with the Tax Offices!) Yet another case of why-o-why did they knock them down - especially given the interest in the 2-tone music scene today. To the right in the bottom photo were the stables for the dray-horses. The grandfather was a 'carman' for the LMS and delivered all over the city with his horse and cart. Just 3 horses in his 40 year career. Sadly I never got to visit these historic buildings before they were demolished.

This thread is amazing as it was only the other day I wondered if there was more to the buildings within Warwick Road garage than met the eye. They looked more Historic than any purpose built garage building I'd seen. To top it all off it seems the Garage have a Facebook page with an interest in the area: (Rights to the owners!) Obviously this one is looking up Warwick Road pre-Ring-Road - What's the White Showroom on the right? And the real Cherry on the Cake find!!!
