After having a meal at the 'Bear Inn' at Berkswell on Tuesday I decided to get to bike out again in those 3 glorious hours of autumn sun we had on Thursday morning to discover a bit more about the area. It always amazes me what gems we have so close to Coventry. Here's a few photo's.
The Church of England parish church of St. John the Baptist is a late-12th century Norman building.
The War Memorial in the grounds of St. John the Baptist Parish Church. At first I thought it was a folly as I've never seen a War Memorial like this.
Inside the Memorial.
The low sun catches the colours of the stone.
The two storey gabled and timbered porch added in the 16th Century, also note the sundial on the tower.

Also if you walk through the churchyard keeping to the left and through the stile there is a lovely walk where you can see the large Berkswell house lake and woods. I think it leads onto Heart of England walk

Hi all & thank you Pat
I too have so enjoyed walking between Berkswell & Hampton many times over the years. I remember the walk route being changed when the then new airport terminal was opened. It is an easy walk in either direction with an extention from Berkswell railway station. Please do check the train times, as Hampton station is not so well served as it used to be. Good food at the Railway pub next to Berkswell station is a bonus. The ramble was a regular feature in the old Evening telegraph. |

I moved from Berkswell last year after having spent ten years living in what used to be part of the old stable block at Berkswell Hall. This was the view from our house:
And yes - its Berkswell, as we used to say - 'where all us Berks live!!!' |

Up until some weeks ago, there have been notices in the old tea shop / shop window, about it being taken over and re-opening soon. Down there a couple of weeks back, and the window is now clear of everything. Anyone have any info?

Up-date on the old tea shop. Apparently, they are waiting for planning permission, and it is going to be a licensed premises with inside eating.

Hi all,
One of my memories of Berkswell, apart from weddings, was during a school holiday when I had set out from home for a days transpotting, but decided to travel by Coventry Transport bus, simply for the delight of a ride on an offset cab single deck. No 19.
Hold tight please! |

Philip, is the Bear at Berkswell still standing? It used to be the Bear and Ragged Staff in our heydays. |

Yes, Dreamtime.
It was the last time that I was there. Where the Bear is, is nearly half a mile away from the railway, but I will look next time that I'm walking.
It must still be there because someone wrote a review about it one day ago on TripAdvisor. |
